As he gears up to tie the knot with Margaret, FEMAIL has taken a look back at Jack’s impressive journey – including how he went from a normal kid in New Jersey to one of the most connected men in the music industry, and how he channeled the heartbreak he felt after tragically losing his little sister as a teen into his music.

From his long list of successes and achievements to his past romances – he was previously linked to famous faces like Scarlett Johansson and Lena Dunham – here’s everything you need to know about Margaret’s fiancé.

A look back at Jack’s Childhood: How losing his sister as a teen inspired him to become a musician

Jack was born on March 31, 1984 in Bergenfield, New Jersey, to parents Shira (who worked as a nurse) and Rick Antonoff (who was a business investor). He is pictured as a child with his dad

His older sister, Rachel Antonoff, is a fashion designer who launched her own self-titled clothing brand in 2008.  Her clothes have been worn by famous faces like Jack’s ex Lena, Zooey Deschanel, and Dianne Guerrero.

The family was struck with tragedy when Jack’s youngest sister, Sarah, died of brain cancer at the age of 13, when he was a senior in high school.

‘I watched my sister die, and it changed me forever,’ he later told the New York Times

But her death is what ultimately inspired him to become an artist. He added, ‘I felt so compelled to tell that story. It’s what makes me feel like I have a reason to live.’

He later told ABC that losing her resulted in him suffering from ‘very intense anxiety and depression.’

‘At that point in life, that’s when you’re supposed to be carefree and think that the world is wild open and anything is possible… I had the opposite experience,’ he said.

‘My world felt very much closed and it felt like anything horrible was possible. … To this day, I still have very intense anxiety and depression.’

After parting ways with Outline, Jack formed another band called Steel Train with his friend Scott Irby-Ranniar, in which he was the lead singer.

After recruiting a few more members, they released an EP called For You My Dear in 2003.

The band went on to drop one more EP and three full studio albums, embarked on numerous tours, and they even performed at a series of big festivals over the years – including Lollapalooza in 2007 and Coachella in 2009 and 2010.

Jack continued to perform with them up until 2013, when they played their final show together at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City.

While in Steel Train, Jack also joined his pals and fellow musicians Nate Ruess and Andrew Dost to form another group called Fun.

They announced that they were taking an indefinite hiatus in February 2015, writing on Facebook at the time that they weren't breaking up, but rather, taking time to focus on solo endeavors. Jack is pictured in 2021

Fun.’s debut album, Aim and Ignite, came out in 2009, and its second LP, entitled Some Nights, dropped in 2012.

The band was behind some major hit songs like We Are Young (which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number one and won the Song of the Year award at the Grammys), Some Nights, and Carry On.

They announced that they were taking an indefinite hiatus in February 2015, writing on Facebook at the time that they weren’t breaking up, but rather, taking time to focus on solo endeavors.

‘First and foremost, to answer the question that has been raised most often: Fun. is not breaking up,’ the band wrote in a joint statement.

‘Fun. was founded by the three of us at a time when we were coming out of our own bands.

‘One thing that has always been so special about Fun. is that we exist as three individuals in music who come together to do something collaborative.

‘We make Fun. records when we are super inspired to do so. The three of us have always followed inspiration wherever it leads us.

‘Sometimes that inspiration leads to Fun. music, sometimes it leads to musical endeavors outside of Fun. We see all of it as part of the ecosystem that makes Fun., fun.’

Despite Fun.’s success, Jack recalled feeling like he wanted to do more. So in February 2014, he launched a solo project called Bleachers.

‘I remember immediately – immediately – feeling like, “I don’t want to play We Are Young when I’m 35.” I don’t want to be defined by this,’ he told the New York Times during a 2017 interview.

He has since dropped three EPs and three full-length albums under the stage name, and has won six Grammy Awards for his work.

‘There was a time very before Bleachers came out when it was this thing that my manager and I were super excited about and everyone else was like, “What are you doing?” in an almost hostile way,’ he told the Guardian in 2015, while discussing the solo project.

‘People would say: “You’re in a really successful band. What’s the problem?” But the funny thing is, there was no problem.

Jack (pictured in August) started his own music festival, called Shadow of the City, in 2015. The one-day event takes place in Asbury Park, New Jersey, every year, and has seen a slew of famous performers like Hayley Kiyoko, Charli XCX, The 1975, Khalid, Carly Rae Jepsen, and of course, Bleachers

‘With art and the work you do, it has to be constantly dictated by what you’re feeling and where you want to go with it.

‘People in my life just had this big, “Why?” And I think the album answered that question. I had to say these things and I had to write these songs.

‘Stepping away from Fun. was both exciting and terrifying. The weight was all on me, and if I f**ked it up, I’d f**ked it up.’

He also launched his own Google Play series called Thank You and Sorry, and had a brief appearance in the movies Hello, My Name is Doris and The Sparks Brothers.

In total, he has now received seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for one Golden Globe Award.

‘There is a lifeblood to this thing, whether you’re onboard or you’re not. And I’m so thankful that so many people are onboard,’ he told Vanity Fair in 2017, while discussing his passion for music.

‘It’s pumping either way. And so I pray that whatever I do, I have that, and I think one day it’ll probably cross over to kids.

‘I wonder if that’s the moment that I stop, I don’t know, it’s not really what I think about. You do it until you don’t have it…

‘I did it because it made me feel vital. So my hope in life is there’ll always be something that makes me feel that way.

‘But I really don’t care if it’s [music] or anything, or like blowing glass bongs. I just want to chase that light of something that’s worth doing.’

Jack announced in January 2022 that he was working on a new Bleachers album, which he insisted will be out sometime this year.

He is also currently gearing up to go on another tour as the one-man band, which kicks off on June 29 at the Forum in Los Angeles, California.

Jack’s star-studded connections: How he played a hand in the success of big names like Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey

Jack was introduced to global superstar Taylor in 2013, when she asked him to help her make a song for the movie One Chance, starring James Corden.

According to the pop star, she wanted to work with him for the track after she became drawn to his ‘boundless enthusiasm.’

'There is a boundless enthusiasm in the way Jack makes music, and it’s an absolutely irresistible quality to find in a collaborator,' gushed Taylor (seen with Jack at the Grammys in March 2021). 'The excitement he exudes in the studio is just so contagious, and he never seems overworked because he genuinely, hopelessly, deeply loves what he’s doing'

‘I see people pose the question all the time: “How does Jack Antonoff have the time and energy to be making this many records?” The answer is the very same reason I wanted to make music with him in the first place, all those years ago,’ she told Billboard in 2021.

‘The excitement he exudes in the studio is just so contagious, and he never seems overworked because he genuinely, hopelessly, deeply loves what he’s doing.’

She also gushed to the Times, ‘His excitement and exuberance about writing songs is contagious.

‘He’s an absolute joy. That’s why everyone loves him. I personally wouldn’t trust someone who didn’t.’

They created the song Sweeter Than Fiction for the flick, after it was said that they bonded over a shared love for a particular snare drum sound used in a Fine Young Cannibals song.

The duo then teamed up to make three songs on Taylor’s album 1989, including Out of the Woods, I Wish You Would, and You Are in Love.

They also worked together on her song with Zayn Malik, called I Don’t Want to Live, which was featured in the movie Fifty Shades Darker.

He co-wrote and co-produced six songs on her album Reputation, including her massive hit Look What You Made Me Do.

Jack also played a major role in her albums Lover (he helped produce 11 of the songs), Folklore (he worked on six of the tracks with Taylor), and Evermore (he was a co-writer on two of the tunes).

‘I think one of the reasons why she’s so brilliant is that she just simplifies the process,’ Jack told the Guardian of working with Taylor.

‘What’s incredible to watch about Taylor is she writes the same way I remember writing when I was 15.

‘Just having an idea and a guitar and working it out. Other times, I’d email her a track I put together that I think she’d like. 20 minutes later, she’d send me a voice memo of her singing this chorus on top of the track, and 20 minutes after that, she’ll send me a verse idea.

‘Her songs are about these personal things that everyone goes through and that she goes through as well, whether it’s feeling bullied and ashamed, or picking yourself up after you’ve been knocked down.’

He also appeared in the music video for his lead single, Green Light, and performed the song Liability alongside Lorde on Saturday Night Light.

‘Much has been said of Jack’s ability to be an empathetic, sensitive and respectful collaborator to women, and while that’s certainly true, I’d put his success down to another of his more underrated qualities: how fast he is,’ Lorde told Billboard.

‘I’ve never heard anyone beat up the keyboard like Jack making a beat in 30 seconds on Pro Tools.

‘The dude can jump from instrument to instrument to build you a canvas upon which to write in minutes.

‘It’s an invaluable creative tool for me, how easily he can pick up the thread and go wherever. When the two of us are racing to capture an idea, it’s like actual alchemy.
