Martha Stewart attended Basso’s first-ever fashion show at the Regency Hotel in 1983.

Forty years later she had the pleasure of walking arm in arm with her old friend as he took his birthday bow.

Dennis’ designs were a hit from the start. “My first show was well attended,” he told Dailymail.com backstage.

“The New York Times, WWD and Ivana Trump were all there. The Times and WWD gave me a huge review, it was very successful. I have worked hard and now we are 40 years later.’

Dennis knew he would be in the industry for a long time and attributes his success to his laser focus.

“I loved it and wanted to follow in the footsteps of the great Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta and Mr. Valentino, he said.

“That was my drive and I loved the whole idea and the sensitivity of it, what they did and how they achieved it.”

Basso believes he has remained relevant all these years by ‘going with the flow’.

And while fashion trends have become more casual and old dress codes relaxed, there is always a demand for clothing for special occasions.

“Athleisure is great, but there will always be that woman who wants to dress up and wherever that woman is, she will find me,” Dennis said.
