Downtown Los Angeles was early on Wednesday morning under the curfew after Mayor Karen Bass announced the nocturnal limitations, an attempt to calm protests after days of demonstrations against the Trump government’s immigration policy.

Mrs Bass announced the dinner at a press conference on Tuesday evening. She said it would run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and that she expected it to take a few days.

The mayor emphasized that the area was about a square mile under the curfew, in a city of around 500 square miles, and was intended to prevent spread episodes of looting and damage to companies. Almost 200 people were arrested in Los Angeles on Tuesday before the curfew came into force, officials said, most in a day since the protests started on Friday.

Mrs Bass said that 23 companies in the city center were looted on Tuesday and that graffiti had caused “considerable damage” to ownership.

The evening clock did not apply to residents of the area, homeless, members of the news media or public safety staff. In a message to residents, Leslie Ridings and Cassy Horton, founders of the downtown Los Angeles Residents Association, said they “were grateful for the exemption from the resident.”

Some companies were closed early on Tuesday. After the limitations started, some protesters held on the street near a complex of federal buildings that had been a focus of protests, and the police of Los Angeles said it had made some arrests. But the area soon emptied and streets that were full of demonstrators the night before were almost completely clear.
