Messenger gets HD video calling, AI-powered wallpapers and these features
Meta Platforms has introduced new features for Messenger that aim to improve the experience during audio and video calls. Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), users can benefit from customized backgrounds during Messenger video calls for better expressiveness. It also brings HD video calling to the app, among other updates like background noise cancellation, voice isolation, and voicemail-like features. Notably, this update builds on recent additions to the platform, including AI-generated themes rolled out in September.
New features on Messenger
In a blog afterMeta has detailed the new features on Messenger. It introduces HD video calling, allowing users to have higher quality conversations. The option is enabled by default when calling over Wi-Fi, while it can be toggled for use over mobile data. Meta also offers voice isolation and background noise cancellation to improve voice clarity and reduce ambient noise. Both features can be enabled via call settings in Messenger.
Another big highlight is the addition of AI-powered backgrounds. The feature uses Meta AI – the company’s AI assistant – to generate backgrounds based on text descriptions. It is available from the effects icon in video calls by tapping Backgrounds option.
Messenger will also get voicemail-like functionality. The company says users can leave audio or video voice messages if the recipients don’t answer the call. The function works via the Record message option that appears once the call is declared unanswered.
According to Meta, iPhone users will soon be able to benefit from hands-free calling. They can ask Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, to make calls on their behalf using voice prompts. Furthermore, they can also dictate messages that they want to send via Siri.
This development comes a month after the company introduced a new Reminders feature for Messenger. This allows users to glimpse photos from their past chats, which can be viewed and shared with their community.
