Meta will show this post after negative reactions to the ‘Made With AI’ label
Meta on Monday updated its label for detecting artificial intelligence (AI) content from “Made with AI” to “AI Info.” The announcement comes just days after several Instagram influencers and photographers criticized the social media giant for incorrectly labeling their original posts as AI-generated content. In a statement, Meta acknowledged that the previous label didn’t meet people’s expectations and didn’t always provide enough context. The company now hopes the new label will clear up some of the confusion while also providing context about images and videos that have been edited with AI tools.
Meta changes AI content detection label to ‘AI Info’
Company updated an older post where it highlighted its approach to labeling AI-generated content, noting that posts will no longer be labeled “Made with AI,” but will instead be tagged with “AI Info.” However, Meta will continue to flag posts that have even minor edits made using an AI tool. While several users have started seeing the new label, Gadgets 360 was unable to verify it. The new labels will likely roll out to all users in the coming days.
Users can also click on the AI label to get more context about it. Tapping on it will open a bottom page that says, “Generative AI may have been used to create or edit content in this post.” It also shares information about what generative AI is, for users who aren’t familiar with the technology.
According to the post, Meta uses industry-standard indicators that other companies include in content created with their tools to detect whether something was created using AI. Notably, some of these indicators include the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards.
The social media giant also stressed that it will continue to work with companies across the industry to improve its AI labeling process to ensure it better reflects their intent. However, as discovered by Gadgets 360, a large number of AI-generated images are going undetected by the company’s tools.
There is also concern that the liberal use of the “AI Info” label, even to flag images that have been retouched using AI, could obscure its real purpose, which is to identify deepfakes and manipulative AI content.
