Microsoft removes ads from Skype on all platforms with latest update
Microsoft on Monday rolled out a new update to Skype — its videoconferencing and VoIP-based calling platform — that improves the platform’s overall usability. The Redmond-based company says that Skype is now ad-free across all platforms, which should provide users with a cleaner experience. Microsoft also introduced a number of new features, including revamped AI-powered image rendering and improved in-app navigation.
Skype update removes ads on all platforms
Microsoft revealed Skype detailed the series of changes and design tweaks it is rolling out to Skype with version 8.125.76.201, in a blog post published on Monday. Ads have now been removed from all Skype channels across all platforms. The change is said to provide a more user-friendly experience for the app, allowing users to focus on their conversations without the distraction of ads.
Additionally, it also promises more streamlined access to the AI image maker. The Redmond-based tech company says that users can now create AI images from the chat window or the top navigation bar.
Alternatively, it can also be found next to the forward option in the message context menu. Clicking on images created with AI now opens an expanded view, making it easier for users to preview their creations before sending them to other users.
In addition to creativity tools, Microsoft is also making it easier to sign in to Skype on iOS devices, thanks to OneAuth integration. It replaces the previous login system, allowing users to automatically sign in to Skype without needing a password, if they’re already signed in on other Microsoft platforms like Teams. Notably, this authentication method was already available on Skype for Android.
In addition to new features, the Skype update also brings bug fixes. Microsoft says it fixes an issue that prevented users from sending media when connected to a 5G network. According to the update log, several iOS users had an issue where they could hear the ringtone but not answer calls. This issue is also said to be fixed.
According to the company, the update is being rolled out gradually and will be available to users in the coming days.
