A Melbourne shop assistant burst into tears when he learned that he had just won $1 million on Channel 9’s Millionaire Hot Seat quiz show.

Antony McManus, 57, won the Fastest Finger First round early in the popular show hosted by Eddie McGuire, netting him $1000 and a lifeline to use later.

Once in the hot seat facing McGuire, he answered all five questions correctly, before reaching the final hurdle – a tricky one on classical literature.

Mr McManus is the second person ever in the show’s history to win the top prize, which he says immediately changed his life.

“I thought I’d rent forever, but now I’ve bought a beautiful apartment and even paid cash for it!” he said after the episode filmed in May.

“Now I don’t have to worry about the future of my husband, Ron and me. I am so thankful that the stars aligned on the day.

“So much had to go right before I could win, and it did. It’s still hard to believe.’

Mr. McManus encouraged anyone considering signing up for the show to go for it.

“If it happened to me, it could happen to you,” he said.

He and Ron were unofficially married 17 times during equal rights demonstrations, on radio and TV, before finally legally tying the knot in January 2018.

The 57-year-old is also treasurer of the Positive Attitude charity, which provides food and companionship to people living with HIV.

On the popular Channel 9 show, contestants have won a whopping $87,098,000 in prize money over the past 21 years.
