Mom shocked when daughter’s dance studio charges her £70 for flimsy £7 Shein dress
A mother was shocked when her daughter’s dance school charged her £70 for a £7 Shein dress for her recital.
Megan, who among other things posts @alwaysshyasked people if she was “crazy” for feeling “ripped off” for purchasing the “flawed” dress.
In a video she says: “My daughter’s dance studio charged me $100 (£70) for a $7 (£7) costume from Shein.
“Okay, I need the dance teachers on TikTok to tell me if I’m crazy or if my daughter’s dance studio is crazy.
“We’re in the middle of recital season and she took her costumes home last week.
“I realized they are from Shein. There are a few issues with this.”
She added that she didn’t want to support Shein in any way, and that she was also annoyed that the school had charged her “ten times what they paid for one costume.”
Megan decided to confront the school about the expensive outfit.
She explained: “I asked why I was paying $100 (£70) for a flimsy piece of rubbish that they were paying $9 (£7) for at Shein.
“Their response was that there are costs associated with measuring the girls, steaming the outfits, choosing a costume that fits the mood of the song, and for hangers and garment bags.
“To be clear, the garment bags are literally clear garbage bags that they put the costumes in so we can take them home.
“I feel like I am being scammed, but please tell me if my perception is wrong and if this is a common practice.
“My daughter has been dancing since she was little, and I’ve never experienced anything like this before.
“Give me your opinion, because I need to know how nuclear to go.”
Her video has received more than 600,000 likes and sparked a discussion in the comments.
Many parents felt that the dance studio was wrong.
Someone commented: “They may not have counted on someone calculating the actual costs… that’s madness.”
Another added: “Nope girlfriend, you are being scammed. 10x raise is ridiculous.”
However, many defended the dance studio, with one saying, “10x is a lot, but to pay their employees to measure your kids, sort costumes, hang them, etc., they should charge more.”
In a follow-up video, Megan said she didn’t feel like she should have been “so fiery” in her annoyance, as they “do like our dance studio.”
What is Shein and is it legit?
Shein is a fast fashion retailer that operates exclusively online and is based in China. It has become a popular shopping destination for many around the world.
In 2023, the company was valued at $66 billion, dwarfing popular brands Zara and H&M.
The fashion chain was founded in late 2008 by entrepreneur and marketing specialist Xu Yangtian, also known as Chris Xu.
Shein is a legitimate sales website and not a phishing scam.
However, according to reviews, you may receive a disappointing order or experience shipping issues if you order through the site.
There are many complaints about the quality, which makes sense when you look at the price tag.
She added: “I don’t want this situation to affect what we think about the studio as a whole. Because while I’m still shocked by the difference between what they charge and what I paid, the dance community has kindly educated me.
“I have a number of studio owners, dance teachers, early dancers and dancing mothers Let me know in the comments and through my DMs and tell me this is completely normal.
“Now many of you say, no, this is crazy, but running a studio is expensive.
“You’re right. It’s a business.”
I asked why I was paying $100 (£70) for a flimsy piece of garbage that they were paying $9 (£7) for on Shein

She added: “I feel like the consensus is about 50/50.
“A lot of people have said, ‘It’s a scam’ and ‘No, this is normal.’
“So I choose to see the glass half full and say, even though I was a little shocked by the situation, that it is normal and that if my daughter likes to dance, and she does, this is what we can expect.”
Many responded by saying she shouldn’t have apologized in the second video, with one person writing: “DON’T APOLOGIZE, you are NOT wrong!!!”
