Mom sighs as 11-year-old begs for Halloween trend, making parents spend more
FIRST there were Christmas Eve baskets, then Easter boxes and now… Boo Baskets?
The new trend sweeping social media – especially in America – involves parents packing a container full of spooky and autumnal treats for their little ones.
However, the added pressure to spend even more to keep their kids busy and stay trendy is becoming too much for some.
In a post to the Family Lowdown Tips & Ideas group on Facebook, one mom wrote, “Is anyone asking for a Boo Basket?
“My 11-year-old keeps sending me TikToks. I mean, when was this a thing?”
And other mums in the comments section were quick to share their thoughts, with one writing: “It’s another stupid fad that everyone is starting to do.

“It’s actually like an Easter basket, but full of Halloween stuff.
“TikTok’s flashing is responsible for a lot of madness.”
“It’s a trend now, isn’t it?” another added.
“It drives everyone crazy! I give my kids a bucket and some pieces every year, but they never go crazy haha.”
“Do these children forget who is raising them?” someone else marveled.
“We are millennial parents. They need to lower their expectations!”
“I can understand why kids ask for it or enjoy it, but as adults we may need to think about exactly what values we are teaching them,” wrote another.
“So much consumerism of things that are only used for a limited time and ultimately end up in the landfill increases our carbon footprint.
“When our children were growing up, we enjoyed Halloween by doing crafts, carving pumpkins, playing games and watching a movie.
“They made their own costumes from old clothes and sheets, we used face paint and sometimes went to Halloween parties or went trick or treating with people in our town who wanted to join in the fun.”
“Bloody YouTube & TikTok have a lot to answer for,” someone else sighed.
“Yes, my girls aged 10 and 13 keep asking for it.
Fabulous’ editor-in-chief Martha Cliff reflects on a spooky season
While some may be waiting for Mariah Carey to slowly thaw, I couldn’t care less that Christmas is less than 100 days away.
Has everyone forgotten that there are less than 50 sleeps until the best holiday of the year?
I have long preferred Halloween to Christmas and spend most of the year mourning the loss of the spooky season.
Not that I don’t find ways to incorporate it into my year.
In April, I marked the halfway point of the most beautiful day of the year with a half-o-ween picnic at a cemetery (where else?). In July I had to get back to work and organized a ‘Summerween’ barbecue, complete with watermelon carvings and Piña Ghoul-adas.
Christmas fanatics are often shocked by my snow season snap, but for me, December is just a lot of stress and overspending.
I don’t know about you, but racking my brain for bigger and better current ideas and spending four times as much time and money at the grocery store is not my idea of a good time.
On Halloween, there is no expectation to spend money. Homemade costumes are often heads and tails above those sold in stores, and when it comes to decorations, what’s better than a carved pumpkin that costs just pennies to make?
In January, children return to school and brag about what Santa brought them this year, all hoping to outdo each other, but November 1 is a different story.
Trick or treating is fair through and through. Unless you bribe the neighbors, kids all get the same thing, and for free, eliminating bragging rights on playgrounds.
Most of all, I love chaos over curation when it comes to Halloween. There is no obligation to strive for perfection, in fact, the crazier the better. It’s all the childhood nostalgia of Christmas, but without the pressure.
So spare me the Christmas spirit, I’ll choose a full-fledged ghost any day.
“It’s like where did the Christmas Eve boxes come from???? Not in my childhood.
“Just cost after cost!”
However, others insisted that they have been doing things similar to Boo Baskets for their children for “years”.
“We’ve been doing them at my house for about 14 years anyway!” wrote one.
“I’ve been doing this for my daughter since she was born and she’s 11 now,” said another.
“I think it’s cute and I like the name boo basket!
“My daughter’s is a box.
“She usually has her Halloween costume and bag, some light sticks and a stuffed animal.
“Now that she’s older it’s getting a little harder, but I don’t plan on stopping.
“I wish someone would have made one for me!”
