Moorebank crash: Driver charged after truck hits 19 cars and school in Sydney’s south-west

A truck driver has been charged with suspected drug possession after his vehicle caused extensive damage when it drove through a major intersection in the city and then came to rest in the rubble of a school building.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Nuwarra and Newbridge roads in Moorebank in Sydney’s south-west about 1.15pm on Saturday.

The semi-trailer truck, which was loaded with soil, collided with 19 vehicles before ending up on the sidewalk and parking lot of a church and an elementary school.

New South Wales police confirmed the truck drove through the yard and only stopped when it hit a classroom.

The 21-year-old driver was trapped in his cab for almost 40 minutes before being released by fire and rescue officers.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he remains after being treated for minor injuries to his face and hands.

NSW Police have now charged the man with a Field Court Attendance Notice (FCAN) for the alleged possession of illegal drugs.

Police believe officers found methamphetamine and an ice pipe in the cab of the truck after the crash.

The man’s driver’s license was also immediately confiscated.

He will also undergo mandatory tests, with police confirming further charges could be laid once results are received.

Meanwhile, two other people were also taken to hospital after the incident.

A 33-year-old man was discharged Sunday after being treated for soft tissue injuries. His wife remains in hospital for observation as a precaution.

The truck is also being mechanically examined while the building is checked for structural damage.

Photos from the scene show a window smashed at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary in Moorebank and a large white truck lying in the rubble.

Paramedics checked six others at the scene as a precaution.
