Most popular dog breeds revealed: the loyal Labrador is far from at the top
WE all know that dogs are man’s best friend – and according to data, Brits really love their furry four-legged friends.
Recent data has shown that there are around 10.6 million dogs living in homes in Britain, making us the second highest dog-owning country in the world.
But with more than 400 recognized dog breeds worldwide, which is Britain’s favorite?
To celebrate World Animal Day on October 4, Open Study College has analyzed search terms for the best dog breeds in Britain to reveal which is the most searched for and therefore our favourite.
Winner
Cocker Spaniels are Britain’s favorite dog breed, with an average of 49,930 searches per month for the breed.
London searches for the breed the most, with 22,220 searches per month, followed by Birmingham with 2,900.
Cocker Spaniels are known for their gentle temperament, affectionate yet lively behavior, and are generally good with children, making them the perfect pet.
Second place
Golden retrievers follow in second place, with an average of 46,880 monthly searches.
Like Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers tend to be gentle, patient, and good with children.
They are known to shed and need a lot of socialization.
3rd place
Rottweilers are the third favorite dog breed in Britain, with 46,420 searches for the breed every month.
London searches for the breed the most, with an average of 22,200 searches per month, and Birmingham follows with 3,600 per month.
When properly trained, Rottweilers are loyal, safe, and well-behaved.
4th place
Rottweilers are closely followed by the adorable dachshund – also known as sausage dog – with more than 40,000 searches for the popular breed every month.
This sweet little breed is known for being loyal and courageous. They can be protective of their owners and wary of strangers.
As cute as they are, dogs of this breed often are terribly shouts and barks a lot – so if you want peace and quiet in the house, maybe give the sausage dog a miss…
5th place
Next on the list is the German Shepherd, with just under 40,000 monthly searches online.
Loyal and loving, German Shepherds are typically considered a good choice for families because they are gentle with children.
However, as with all dog breeds, German Shepherds need to be supervised to ensure that everyone, your children and the dog, are safe and happy.

French Bulldogs can make good family dogs because they are affectionate, loyal and playful. So it’s no surprise that there are more than 38,000 searches for this adorable breed every month.
Frenchies are known for being quite laid-back and flexible, but due to their flat heads they can ‘suffer from serious health problems’, vets warn.
The shape of their heads affects their breathing and can cause a disease called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which can involve major medical costs and lifelong maintenance.
The least popular breeds include Hungarian Vizslas, with an average of 11,610 searches per month, and Miniature Schnauzers, with 11,890 monthly searches.
