A MOTHER OF NINE has told how she got around a lack of space in her family home by building an extension in the garden for her daughter.

Danielle explained that her children were increasingly cooped up in the main house, but her daughter, who turns 20 in October, couldn’t afford to move out.

Instead, ‘Mom and Dad’s bank’ sprang into action and began building a luxury extension at the back of their garden.

Danielle took to TikTok to video of the structure under construction, and what it looked like when completed.

The self-contained accommodation has a “spacious bedroom” with “enough room for a sofa” and possibly a TV corner.

There is a toilet and a shower but no bath. Danielle said her daughter has to come to the main building if she wants a bath.

She also explained that although they had obtained planning permission for the extension, they had cleverly avoided paying even more council tax than they already were.

“We don’t want to pay a separate council tax, so there are no cooking facilities,” she said.

“The council has told us we will have to pay council tax unless we remove the sewer pipe,” someone wrote in the comments.

To which Danielle replied, “I think different councils come with different rules.”

“Do you have to pay municipal taxes if there are water pipes?” asked another.

“I desperately want to do something similar.”

“Luckily, we don’t have to pay extra taxes in our province,” Danielle replied.

According to garden room specialists My Eco Spacean outbuilding must be “self contained” to qualify for council tax payment, “meaning it has its own entrance, bathroom, kitchen facilities and is separate from the main dwelling”.

“Local authorities will carefully assess the degree of self-reliance to determine eligibility,” they added.

The rules may differ per municipality, so it is always wise to check this with the municipality to avoid unnecessary fines.

Danielle’s daughter’s ‘dream suite’ was completed with a walk-in closet with a large mirror, drawers and a clothes rail.

In total, the project has cost them a lot of “blood, sweat and tears”, plus £26,000.

“POV: You built a bedroom in the backyard because you had too many kids,” Danielle wrote at the top of the video.
