My aunt regretted her son’s name after she discovered a family secret when grandma died
A BIG secret sent shockwaves through a family after the death of their matriarch.
Her granddaughter said the revelation immediately made her aunt regret the name she gave her son when he was born.
She shared her “wild but true story” on Reddit’s Name Nerds forum, which has more than 373,000 members.
LIVING A LIE
The woman said her grandmother kept a secret from her family until her death.
She was responding to a Redditor’s question asking parents if they regret the names they gave their children.
“My aunt, now in her sixties, named her firstborn son ‘John,’ after her maternal grandfather, whom she never met because he died in World War II,” she wrote under the name Alien view.
“That’s what her mother always said to her.
“After her mother (my grandmother) died, we found out that she had run away from home as a teenager and completely fabricated her family history.
“Her father’s name was Gerald.
“He never fought in World War II and lived to be 96 years old.
“My aunt was furious that she hadn’t named her son after anyone.
“After a lie, as she said.
“Big regret about a name, although it’s not quite what you’re looking for, just had to share.”
“It was a journey where everything unraveled in the weeks following her funeral!” she added.
NAME CHANGES
Many people were shocked by the story and shared their own stories of name grief.
One person said there were three other children with the same name as their son in daycare.
Another said she regrets the compromises she made after she couldn’t agree on a name with her husband.
“My aunt changed my niece from LouLou to Wendi when she started school because she was made fun of,” said a third.
“She’s really a Wendi and LouLou seems so strange to her now.”
What does the name John mean?
According to The pushJohn is a Hebrew name meaning “God is gracious.”
The Biblical boy’s name has remained popular over the years.
It currently ranks as the 26th most popular boy name in the US.
“I gave my child a name that almost everyone has a problem with,” said another.
“It’s spelled correctly, it’s a little unusual but not too unusual, and it’s not difficult to pronounce.
“I honestly didn’t know it would be controversial. And I think it’s such a shame that they have to keep repeating and correcting people forever.”
The confessions follow a mother who was ridiculed for naming her son Krystopher.
The now-deleted Reddit user told members of the Tragedy forum where her ex-partner mentioned the children he had with his new girlfriend Tempest and Leviathan.
She was speechless when people defended his name choice, but said it is “so so so bad” that her son is called Krystopher.
Someone said misspelling a common name looks “f**k uneducated,” while another said her son should have to correct the spelling of his name forever.
