My big Sainsbury’s doesn’t have changing rooms, but I secretly try before I buy anything

There is nothing more annoying than picking up something from the clothing range at a supermarket and discovering that there is no changing area.

But one woman has explained how to get around this in a stealthy way, and it means she can easily try out the items before she buys them.

Bex took to her TikTok page share the hackas she started the video wearing a red sweater, jeans and red Converse.

She then unbuttoned the jeans and began to take them off, revealing a pair of loose-fitting plaid pants underneath.

“When your big Sainsbury’s doesn’t have changing rooms but you want to try before you buy,” she wrote over her video.

And she asked in the caption: “Is anyone else doing this?”

The comments section was almost immediately filled with others admitting to doing the same thing.

“Always wear leggings, it makes it easier to put clothes over them,” one person wrote.

To which Bex replied: “Omg great tip!”

“Me in every store so I don’t have to worry about fitting rooms, especially with a toddler,” another added.

“Always, but I do have trouble keeping my balance,” laughed a third.

“I still do this at Primark because I can’t deal with those small rooms,” said another.

‘Run to your nearest Sainsbury’s,’ say fashionistas after discovering a selection of must-have cardigans just in time for autumn

“OMG, I did this today!” another admitted.

“Hahahah, try before you buy,” Bex giggled.

“Ridiculous that they don’t have changing rooms anymore,” someone else raged.

“I left things behind that I would have tried on before and possibly taken with me.”

“Good for you and leave it there if you don’t want it to teach them a lesson!” said another.

“They got rid of the changing rooms because they know we’re all too rubbish to bring stuff back and they’re making a fortune!”

Is supermarket fashion the new shopping street?

Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:

The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. When you do your weekly shop these days, you can also pick up a selection of handbag-friendly, stylish pieces for the whole family.

Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent rise for the quarter thanks to ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earned the title of number one destination for women’s clothing on the high street.

Asda’s George clothing line has made £1.5m for the supermarket by 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury’s clothes are sold at full price rather than discounted, and Nutmeg sales at Morrisons are also up 2 per cent in the past year increased.

How come supermarket fashion is becoming so successful?

Besides being actually affordable, the clothing is also of good quality, many of which are part of programs such as the Better Cotton Initiative.

Often they stick to classic pieces that they know will please the customer year after year.

And because they buy so much inventory, they can convert pieces quickly and buy them cheaper because of the volumes.

“Exactly, I don’t want to take it home and have to make the trip again if I want to go back!” Bex agreed.

However, those who have dealt with supermarket changing rooms explained exactly why they are closed, more often than not.

‘I worked in a Sainsbury’s!’ wrote one.

“People changing/stealing their underwear and leaving their old dirty stuff behind, you name it, we’ve seen it!

“It’s less of a hassle when they’re closed.”

“Theft is through the roof and people poop and pee in them all the time,” added another.

“We will never open ours!”

While others shared their own suggestions to address the lack of locker rooms.

“I buy them, try them on in the toilet and if I don’t like them, I come back,” one person wrote.

“Good idea! Annoying to have to wait for the money to come back in!” said Bex.

“Put the waistband of pants or jeans around your neck, it fits perfectly, it fits you too,” another added.

“If the connection is not too small, if the overlap is too big!”

“I did this!!” Bex replied.

“But I wanted to see how the pant leg fits because of the barrel style.”

“I wouldn’t dare if security came by!” someone else admitted.

“Haha, but that’s certainly allowed?” thought Bex.

“I was a rebel after all!”
