My child was scarred for life by a Shein purchase – I was offered 94 cents in compensation

A mother claims her teenage daughter was ‘scarred for life’ with horrific burns after spilling ‘Shein nail glue’ on her legs – and was only offered an ‘insulting’ refund of 94 cents.

Rebecca Clarke, who lives in Basingstoke, Hampshire, was shocked when she heard her daughter Jasmine screaming from upstairs as she applied a set of false nails.

The 47-year-old said she bought a set of Shein acrylic stick-on nails and quick-drying nail glue for the 13-year-old in August.

After gluing on some nails, Jasmine reportedly dropped the glue bottle, spilling some of the contents onto her leggings.

The mother then claims that the nail glue burned through her daughter’s clothes and immediately caused blisters on the inside of her legs.

The mother-of-two rushed Jasmine to A&E where doctors were forced to pop and drain the blisters, one of which became infected.

Rebecca, who works in administration, said her daughter will be scarred for life and called on Shein to investigate the product due to the severity of the injuries.

The nail glue contains a hazard warning on the back of the product, which advises users to ‘avoid contact with skin and eyes’ and warns that it ‘bonds skin and eyes together in seconds’.

All chemicals used in the product meet British health and safety standards.

Rebecca said: “My daughter wanted to put on some false nails upstairs. She has used this from Shein before and never had any problems.

“She was applying the glue when she dropped the bottle and it slid down the inside of her legs.

“She was wearing leggings at the time, but it clearly went through them. She pulled off the leggings, causing a small amount of skin to come loose.

“She was screaming in pain. I thought we’d see what the burns were like in a few days, but then they started blistering and that’s when I said ‘we’re going to the hospital’.

“She came downstairs and cried and said she was really sorry before showing me her legs. She was in a lot of pain.”

Rebecca rushed her daughter to the emergency room, where she claims doctors were shocked at the extent of her injuries.

The mother had to take Jasmine to weekly appointments to have her wounds dressed and checked, saying it would leave her scarred for life.

There is a warning on the back of the bottle stating that the bottle is ‘irritant’ and that it should not come into contact with the eyes or skin.

Rebecca said: “Within two to three minutes blisters broke out. She had to receive cold water therapy for half an hour because the burns penetrated deeper into her skin.

From what age can you take children to have their nails done?

MOTHERS have sparked controversy after letting their children get acrylic nails. But how old do they have to be to have them legally exported?

According to National Occupational Standards, anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

They also need written permission from a parent or guardian.

It is also a good idea to check the salon you are going to, just to ask if they offer services to children.

“Then the doctors had to burst and deflate the blisters before removing one layer of skin. There is nothing about a burn reaction on the bottle. The doctors were really shocked.

“They said nail glue shouldn’t burn. No doctor could understand how she got such severe burns from a small pot of nail glue.

‘She will be left with scars from this. She has been told she will be scarred for life. She is a thirteen year old girl and wants to wear shorts next year, but she will be left with serious scars.

‘They told us it would take months to heal because the burns were so dark and so deep.

“It was horrible to see your daughter in pain and knowing she would be scarred. I was so confused how nail glue could do this.”

Jasmine says her complaints to Shein have been ignored and claims she received an unexpected refund of 94 cents (the cost of the glue) from the website, which she described as an insult.

Jasmine said: “They never contacted me. All I got was a 94 cent refund for the bottle of glue. I have had no correspondence with them. I have been completely ignored.

“94p is an insult to what she has been through and is still going through. She was a teenager and just wanted to put on fake nails and now she is scarred for life.

“I didn’t get an apology or anything. This could easily burn someone else. I’d hate to think what it could do if it got in someone’s eye or something.

“This needs to be taken more seriously. These were massive burns and it is still going on two months later.

“I would like an apology from Shein and some kind of acknowledgment that they are going to do something about it.”

Shein declined to comment.
