Reddit user Pax_26 said how astonished she was that anyone would give such a bad name to a baby.

“I’m not sure if this is necessarily a tragedy, since both names are spelled correctly, but I had a colleague who named his daughter Melancholy,” she said.

“When I found out on my first day on the job, I thought, ‘Oh, that’s sad for her. What’s her middle name?’”

She probably wished she had never asked.

“My new boss was happy to tell me it was Moon,” she said.

You heard that right.

“Yes, he named his daughter Melancholy Moon,” she said.

“He nicknamed her Melly, which I like just a little bit better,” she continued.

“I’m not sure why you would do this to a child. So maybe this is just a melancholic tragedy and not a tragedy, but I thought I’d share it anyway!”

One Redditor had his own theory about how the name was chosen.

“This guy just wants to be in an indie band so bad, doesn’t he? That sounds like a Smiths or Weezer album,” they said.

Others were also surprised by the unusual name.

“Melancholy is not a name, it’s an adjective,” one user wrote.

“Melly is a shit name. You might as well call her Belly. Go for Melanie,” they added.

“I would not name a child or pet a name that has anything to do with — or sounds or looks like — words that have anything to do with sadness, anger, violence, or death,” said another.

“Well, maybe she’ll grow up to be a very happy person, just out of irony,” they continued.

Others also had reservations about the name.

“Part of me likes it — melancholy is such a pretty word, like tristesse in French seems like a nice name — but it’s clearly not a great name,” one Redditor wrote.

“You know what? I think I would have preferred Melancholia,” another commented.

“Then you could at least call her Lia,” they added.
