My date told me I ‘sounded poor’ because I’m Scottish
A Scottish woman has revealed her most awkward date ever – when a man said her accent sounded ‘bad’.
Writer and actress Isla Fairfield entered the world of online dating when she left Limekilns, Fife for vibrant London in 2022.
But her search for romance did not go smoothly, partly because of the unkind people she met along the way.
Her experiences were so strange that she even wrote a solo performance for the Edinburgh Fringe festival, partly based on her own experiences.
She said Edinburgh Live: “I’ll be honest, it’s really hard to decide which of my dates was the worst because I’ve had so many bad ones.
“I would say one of the worst was when I was dating a guy who was a bit of a finance bro from London. It wasn’t long before he told me I was giving him ‘bad vibes’.
“I asked him to expand, and he said I just sounded poor. I thought, ‘ah, because I’m Scottish’.
“My reaction was like, ‘What the hell?’ I didn’t really know what to do, so I went to the bathroom in the bar and told a random girl in the bathroom.
“Then I pretended to have a headache and left. I wish I had told him the truth, but I didn’t – I just went home.”
Isla’s Hot Girl Summer show takes place at Symposium Hall in Edinburgh from August 19.
The series tells the story of a single twenty-something who, after her relationship ends, goes on a girls’ trip to Barcelona and impulsively finds a job in London.
Like Isla, the protagonist leaves her life in a small town in Scotland behind, throws herself into her new life and begins the perilous journey to find her way in life in The Big Smoke.
It has been described as ‘hilariously tragic and amusingly relatable’.
Meanwhile, one singleton has revealed that dating has become more difficult since transforming her body and losing over 150 pounds.
She talked about the warning signs she now looks for when finding a committed life partner.
New York-based Sophia Roses has nearly 31,000 subscribers on YouTube, where she shares her love of beauty and wellness.
Speaking to The US Sun, she opened up about how her Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery (VSG) has affected her love life.
She revealed that dating a slim figure is difficult as men are on their ‘best behaviour’ and are reluctant to reveal their intentions early on.
She said they made an effort ‘immediately’ but that as things progressed this became less so, whereas when she was older they made the least effort from the start.
“I’ve also noticed that some men’s insecurities are quite apparent,” she said.
“I dated a guy for about 10 months and thought everything was going great.
“But as I continued to lose weight, get more attention, and have more opportunities because of my newfound confidence, he said, ‘I need to find someone who has a better life.’
“Those were his exact words to me: ‘But we can continue to interact with each other.’ That was a first for me.”
