A mother says her daughter hates her after she finds out she was named after a piece of furniture.

The mother said she didn’t think much about the name and that during the conversation with her child’s father she simply pointed to a random object in her bedroom.

To go to Redditthe woman confessed: “I think I made a mistake.

“I feel like I made the wrong choices because I just told my daughter how we came up with her name and now she hates me.”

The mother said she found out she was pregnant with her daughter when she was only 22 years old.

She said that after finding out the baby’s gender, she and her partner lay in bed together trying to think of names.

“I looked at a lamp and jokingly said, ‘How about a shadow?’” she said.

“And for some reason he loved it.

“It stuck, so I named her that, but I spelled it ‘Shaide.’”

The woman’s daughter is now 25 and has finally discovered the meaning of her name.

“She now knows the story behind her name, even though we never thought of telling her,” the mother said.

The post was flooded with responses from Reddit users, many of whom were not fans of the mother’s name choice.

Someone said, “It’s a stupid name.”

Another said: “I think it’s a bit awful and it would have been much better if you had just chosen a normal name.”

In the UK there is no law restricting names, but names that contain obscenities, numbers, misleading titles or are impossible to pronounce are likely to be rejected when registering a child.
