The anonymous woman was clearly unsure of what to do and took to social media to ask for advice.

Posting on Reddit, on the r/legaladvice thread under the username @moateal, the woman titled her post “Neighbor has security camera pointed at our house.”

The woman, from Florida, USA, explained that she and her boyfriend are renting a home.

She confessed: “During Hurricane Helene, part of the fence that separated our yard from the neighbors’ yard fell over. We have never met them.

“Today we noticed that the neighbor has installed a new security camera in the backyard, but it is pointing directly at our house.”

As a result of the intrusive camera, she added: “We feel very uncomfortable with the placement of this camera as we no longer have privacy in our dining room, kitchen, veranda or backyard.

“It’s also weird that they put it there because they also have a fenced yard and it’s set up inside the fence, not in a place where someone could break in from the front.

“I’m putting up a tarp until our landlord gets the fence repaired. But even if the fence were up, it would still be a problem because it points right over the fence.”

Eager for advice, she asked, “What should we do?”

Reddit users quickly flocked to the comments to share their advice, convinced there was nothing the woman could do in this situation.

One person said: “There is no legal problem with your neighbor monitoring his garden in this way. Even if your house is in the background.”

Legally speaking, you don’t have a leg to stand on

To this the woman replied: “Dang:/ I think I’ll just have to put a really big sign over the fence to block it off.”

While a second claimed: “Legally you don’t have a leg to stand on.”

The five main reasons why neighbors argue

A survey by Compare the Market revealed the main reason for the British neighbors’ dispute

  1. Broken Fences – at the top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix them
  2. Parking: one of the biggest causes of neighbor disputes: 54.1 percent of people have problems with people parking in front of their home, parking lot or driveway
  3. Trees – complaints about the neighbour’s tree destroying your garden path were also common; almost half of the participants found it frustrating
  4. Garbage wars – open-air garbage etiquette continues to cause the most heated debates among neighbors
  5. Nosy neighbors – some people have their eyes and ears ready to take a peek and cause trouble for others

The woman then confirmed: “Thank you. I appreciate the opinion.

‘I’m going to have an extension of the fence blocked off the view as soon as the landlord replaces the fence.”

She also added: “[My] My friend is going to try to talk to them soon, but we wanted to make sure we are within our means to ask them and then have the legal information ready in case they say no.

“We don’t mind them doing it. We just don’t want him pointing over the fence.”
