And one homeowner is facing exactly this problem.

They accepted online forum Mumsnet because they urgently needed advice on how to dry their clothes quickly.

They wrote: “I don’t plan on leaving the heating on for a while…

“I have to do so much laundry every day, at least a full load of laundry every day (don’t suggest I do less, it’s impossible, I’ve tried).

“I have a dryer that I use for pants, socks, pajamas, etc!

“But I don’t like to use it on thicker things or things that might shrink, so a lot of the material goes into the chandelier, but it doesn’t dry at this time of year without a heater.

“I dry outside as much as possible, but it has always been raining here lately, it just doesn’t dry outside.

“I can’t skip a load because it will cost twice as much to dry the load next day.

“It doesn’t dry indoors at this time of year either. I don’t have the biggest house, so there isn’t room to do laundry everywhere.

“I have considered a heated dryer but I already use my dryer most days so I don’t want to add £££ to the cost!

‘Do you have any tips for air drying this time of year?

“It takes 1.5 to 2 days to dry at the moment, I have two airers. I am in a constant cycle of washing and drying.”

One person suggested a useful hack

They said, “Can you hang the stuff higher?

“I hang tops on a hanger and use the patio door curtain rail as a clothes rail, and I looked up a kitchen maid thing with a pulley (I’ll find a link in a minute, but I’m not explaining it properly).”

Another said: “Our bathroom towel tail can be put on independently of the central heating, a clothes rail in front of it, or clothes pushed through the bars dry quickly.”

A third added: “Double double everything.

“I still put my towels in the dryer, but if you need less time to remove or finish the rough, 20 minutes is better than two hours.

‘Do you have room for another chandelier?

“You have to make sure everything has enough space to dry.”
