My hair used to break off, but grew long and thick thanks to my dusting cuts
SHE transformed her short, brittle hair in less than a year.
And now Clodagh is doing her best to help others in their own hair care journeys.
Take to TikTok Clodagh explained that the main reason why hair doesn’t grow past a certain length is “because your hair at the bottom is breaking off faster than the rate at which it grows at the top.”
“My hair had been in this state for almost 12 years,” she said, adding a photo of what her hair looked like before.
“And I was able to fix this in less than a year.”
“And that is in one hand due to the fact that I started focusing my hair care routine on preserving the lengths of my hair as much as possible.”
Clodagh credits ‘regular dusting’ for helping her tresses, as she showed off using a sharp pair of scissors to cut off the dead ends.
“Mechanical damage is one of the leading causes of split ends,” she continued.
“And that also includes poor cleaning technique and rough towels.”
She also warned: “If you see a product advertised as removing split ends, it’s a complete lie.”
When it comes to the products she uses, Clodagh explained that she swears by bond-repair creams to “strengthen your hair and prevent breakouts from developing in the future.”
“Making these changes to your hair care routine will absolutely restore your hair and help it grow long,” Clodagh promised.
“The reason why your hair doesn’t grow past a certain length and how to fix it,” she captioned the video.
“How often should I cut the ends?” someone asked in the comments.
“I do a dusting cut monthly, but it just depends on your hair condition,” Clodagh replied.
“My hairstylist told me it was because I slept more on one side than the other,” said another.
Everything you need to know about hair loss
Marie Nieuwoudt, group education manager at CLOUD NINE told Fabulous everything you need to know about hair loss.
What are the most common causes of hair loss?
Marie explained: “There are so many reasons why someone might experience hair loss.
“The main reason is usually hormonal changes or underlying health conditions (such as thyroid disease) and stress
Natural also plays a big role in changes in the health of your hair.
“But another common everyday cause is excessive damage to your hair caused by mistakes in your styling routines – and this is a
big one to be aware of for people who regularly apply heat to their hair!
“It’s important to know the right temperature for your hair type when using styling tools as this is essential to reducing unintentional heat damage.
“I also see that many people experience hair loss due to hereditary conditions that are passed on from generation to generation.”
What are the best hairstyles that people should try to reduce their hair loss?
According to Marie, “Less is more when it comes to hair loss! It’s important to be gentle with your hair, so a style that is low maintenance and limits pulling on your scalp is the best option.
“Putting your hair in a tight ponytail or adding hair clips can cause stress points at the roots.
“Try letting your hair down or loose instead.
“You are not limited in your options, but it pays to be conscious about your hair styling. It is essential to use tools that limit damage to your hair.
“Discussing your concerns with a hairdresser or hair loss specialist is also a great way to find styles that suit your specific needs, while still ensuring you look and feel your best.”
How long does it take for hair loss to stop?
If you want to know when your hair will grow back, Marie confirms: “Hair loss is a personal journey – and it’s different for everyone, so it’s very difficult to put exact timing on this process.
“Every head of hair is unique, and so is your experience with hair loss.
“As always, you can talk to a professional hairdresser or trichologist about your specific concerns and hair changes, and they can help you meet those expectations.
“I can’t stress enough how important it is to be kind to your hair. Most people are quite rough with their hair, and this is something you definitely want to avoid if you’re dealing with hair loss.
“Make sure you choose products and styling routines that you know will benefit your hair, rather than causing additional damage.”
As Clodagh replied: “Yes, this could cause it too. But all the same concept.
“Breakage at the ends, which can happen from several things, such as always sleeping on one side without a protective style.”
“Exactly why I stopped bleaching my hair this year and started getting more haircuts,” someone else commented.
“My hair is definitely longer now than it was at the beginning of the year and so much healthier.”
