My hallway was an 80s horror with bright red carpets – now it looks gorgeous
If you have a spot in your home that you find ugly, it can have a major impact on how you feel in and around your home.
That’s why Betty, also known as @at_home_with_betty on Instagram, decided to redecorate her hallway.
In fragments of the ‘before’ scene, the staircase is seen covered in bright red carpet and the walls are painted a dull gray.
Betty then showed footage of installing a wooden floor to replace the carpet in the downstairs hallway.
The walls were also painted white and she added details with some gray paneling.
After removing the carpet from the stairs, she showed off her skills by painting the outside area bright white.

The clip that follows shows Betty entering her home, revealing the wooden floor, wall panelling and cream-coloured stair runner.
“Red carpetgo away!” she written in the caption.
“To renovate this space we literally changed everything from floor to ceiling (!) to create the inviting entrance we wanted.
“We scraped and plastered the artex ceiling, moved the radiator, [and] the window and the door changed.
“[We also] “We added a stair runner to match the carpet upstairs, covered the hallway wall and laid a herringbone floor,” she added.
She said there was more to her decorating project, such as adding a coat rack and wainscoting the stairs to match the hallway.
When asked who had laid the carpet, she replied that they had done it themselves – and everything else too!
She said in the comments that the flooring is from Pro-Tex Flooring and is the colour Woburn Sand, while the wainscoting was purchased from Dulux in the colour Egyptian cotton.
Dulux paint prices start at £6 depending on the size of the bath.
She explained how they got the ceiling looking as good as new: “My husband scraped off as much Artex as he could, then applied PVA and plastered the ceiling.”
It looked completely different and people couldn’t believe it. They were all amazed in the comments.
“SO beautiful! What a glow-up!” someone wrote.
Four Cheap Home Renovation Tricks
YOU don’t have to spend a ton of money to give a room a new look. Here are five other home renovation tricks you can try.
Kitchen cabinets
One way to give your kitchen a complete transformation for less is to change the look of your kitchen cabinets. There are many different vinyl sidings to choose from, and it’s a quick and easy way to update your home.
Handles
Another thing you can try without spending a lot of money is to replace the handles. You can buy relatively cheap handles at hardware stores or even thrift stores. Adding new handles to your kitchen cabinets or doors in your home can be very effective.
Leftovers
Most of us have old, half-used cans of paint sitting around in the garage, but they’re often forgotten about. However, there could be enough in the can to paint an accent wall in another room, and you don’t have to spend a dime.
Free stuff
It’s worth checking your local Facebook Marketplace or Freecycle to see what other people are getting rid of. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And if someone is planning to redecorate a room, they might want to get rid of a sofa or coffee table that could be used to give a lounge a new look.

“Oh my god, what a transformation [heart eyes emoji]”, a fifth noted.
