My mother begged me not to buy a storage unit for a house, I proved her wrong
A YOUNG woman has revealed how she bought storage units which she converted into a tiny home despite her mother begging her not to.
The woman took to social media to prove her mother wrong by showing how she transformed the outdated little house.
She wrote: “My mother and realtor begged me not to buy my tiny 51-square-foot home. It needed a lot of TLC, but I saw potential in the MCM (mid-century modern) details.
“I knew it could be great and the price was right.
“Here are some before and after pictures. There is still some work to be done. I tried to keep some of the old and add some of the new.”
The photos showed the exterior of her small house, painted dark green with white windows and doors.
Before she got her hands on the small house, the interior was quite dated, with beige tiled floors and dirty brown furniture.
The house featured orange stained wood, which gave it a 70s vibe.
The dining area had a built-in bench in the corner and also a wood-paneled ceiling.
But she looked beyond the outdated parts and focused on the features she could modernize so it would become her dream home.
The front room and dining room were updated by painting the walls white and covering the orange stained wood, but she decided to keep the 70s-style floor and ceiling fans.
In the kitchen, she painted the wooden cabinets dark green to match the exterior of her home, adding gold pulls for a more refined look.
The bench in the dining room was also painted white and she replaced the stained table with a smaller, white one.
The bathroom also got a makeover: she colored the endless wooden elements white and green for a more modern look.
Showing off the impressive transformation, she wrote: “It’s my peace and my little piece of comfort. I don’t need much and it’s just perfectly imperfect in my eyes.”
The post shared on the Facebook group, Small-scale livingwas a hit and received hundreds of likes from viewers.
Are tiny houses legal in the UK?
TINY houses can be in the UK regardless of whether they are on a trailer or not. The legality of tiny houses depends on where they are and what you are using them for.
If you want to place your tiny house in the backyard of your home and the total size of your tiny house does not exceed 19.8m x 6.7m (65ft x 22ft), then there is good news! You do not need a building permit.
Tiny houses that fit within these dimensions and are built on a trailer base are legally classified as caravans. This means that you can legally park them on your property without needing a building permit.
If you plan to do this, you are legally required to use the tiny house only as additional living space, such as an office, gym or studio. However, you are not allowed to rent the space to a tenant.
For those of you who live on agricultural land, what is defined as curtilage can be complicated. In these cases, and in any circumstances where you are unsure, we recommend that you contact your local planning officer.
You can place a Tiny House on your land as a temporary structure for 28 days. If you want to stay longer, we recommend you contact your local planning officer, as other permits are required.
