My mother-in-law opened our wedding gifts, put the money in her pocket and proudly admitted that
A WEDDING went awry when a sticky-fingered mother-in-law decided to keep the gifts and money for herself.
However dishonest she was, she fully admitted that she had accepted the bride and groom’s money.
Reddit user Negotiationflakkerig6846 reported on the debacle in a post on the social media platform.
She said she sat down to unwrap the presents and cards because she thought they had all been unwrapped.
Then the sneaky mother-in-law came in with another ‘pile’ of stuff the guests had brought.
She told the bridge operator and the groom that she planned to use the money from the cards she kept to pay the videographer. The groom did so.
COLD FEET
The bride said the incident took an unexpected turn for her, and was made worse by her new husband’s indifference to the situation.
“I was quite shocked because we didn’t want a videographer at all. My mother-in-law was talked into hiring a videographer at the last minute by her sister,” she says.
She added that the money in the envelopes was intended for a larger project.
“We had asked everyone for money for our honeymoon and the cards had just a little bit more than the videographer’s fee on them,” she said.
PINS FALL
Several Redditors wondered why the bride was so lax about the blatant disrespect at her own wedding.
“I would be furious if my husband was okay with this,” said one. What if one of the cards was actually personal?
“Even without any personal details, it’s insane that your mother-in-law saw fit to read notes addressed to you. It’s equally insane, if not more insane, that your husband would agree.”
The bride explained why she kept her mouth shut.
“People kept asking why your fiancé didn’t stand up for you, but I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say so I just said nothing,” she said.
“He didn’t know I was upset until we had a huge argument right after we left.”
She added that an awkward moment and her generally calm temperament caused her to remain silent.
“I’m not really an assertive person and it was difficult to do that at the time,” she said.
The mother-in-law not only bought money, she also paid attention to the decoration.
“What upset me even more was that there were flowers on her kitchen table and she casually said, ‘Oh, someone gave those to you too.’
“I thought, why aren’t they on my kitchen table?
“[My] My mother-in-law also sent me a picture yesterday of her wearing one of the necklaces I got as a wedding gift and asked if she could wear it to the wedding on Saturday.
“I haven’t even been able to wear it yet.”
