My neighbors can see my entire yard, but a fence isn’t enough, a free idea might be
A HOMEOWNER has admitted he is out of ideas. His neighbours can see 90% of his garden but he can’t put up a fence.
The man explained that he could not put up an extra fence to prevent neighbors from spying on him because there was a pipe running along the edge of his property.
He took over Reddit to explain the situation, showing a photo of his house and that of his neighbors, making his dilemma clear.
“The neighbors can see 90% of my backyard, I am open to ideas on how we can increase privacy,” he wrote with the photo.
“Red = neighbours’ windows. Blue = rainwater drainage along the fence.”
In response to someone’s comment, he added that his “neighbors are nice and we get along well.”
“It’s 100% my problem with that privacy issue.”
People were quick to offer suggestions to the homeowner, one of whom even shared a completely free solution that might work.
“Walk around naked,” they wrote.
“They’re going to put up blinds soon!”
“Best idea ever!” the man replied.
“I think this is why he doesn’t want them in his backyard,” joked another.
As someone else agreed, “Just walk around in your underwear more often.
“The problem will solve itself.”
Others had other suggestions, including some sort of solar sail.
“Maybe a shade sail from the house to the fence?” someone wrote.
“It might need some larger posts, but it could also serve as a carport (sort of…) and increase privacy.”
“Yes, this might be the right way,” the man mused.
How high can a garden fence be?
Despite popular belief, a garden fence can be 100 metres high. For any fence higher than 2 metres, you need a permit.
No building permit is required for fences shorter than 2 metres.
There are some complications, however.
If you are considering installing a fence for your front garden, there are restrictions: fences along a driveway may be a maximum of 1 metre high.
You will need a building permit to put a trellis on a 2m fence.
If a plant you grow on the rack is longer than 2 meters, you do not need to apply for a permit.
“It also seems to me to be one of the cheapest ways.”
But another warned: “Only use shade cloths if you want high maintenance.”
“Also quite noisy in the wind.
“I would go for a kit/sturdy carport or even a real shed if you need one.”
Some even said that he could solve the lack of privacy with some plants.
“Nothing on the side of the house will stop them from looking into the backyard, they will just look over it,” one person wrote.
“I would choose to plant bamboo along the fence.”
“Since you are considering resurfacing your driveway, I would make it a little wider so you can place a planter along the fence and plant some bamboo,” agreed another.
“They grow very quickly and form a screen in no time. And if you put them in a planter, you don’t have to worry about roots or drainage problems.”
“Yeah, I thought so too,” agreed a third.
“Clumping bamboo In containers. Excellent for screening!”
