The TEMPS are starting to drop, and for some people that means spiders are starting to drop too.
A homeowner who is committed to insect control shared his tried and true tips for keeping crawling creatures at bay.
His advice for repelling spiders is to get creative with wall paint.
According to him, a large number of insects could indicate a bigger problem in the home than just a change of season.
“If you have a lot of spiders, that means they have enough insects to eat to maintain their population,” he said on Reddit, writing under the name Chrisbrl88.
“It is also important to realize that spiders do not usually come from outside.
“House spiders are adapted to survive in houses, garden spiders are adapted to survive in gardens, and Spiderman is adapted to survive in New York City,” he joked.
KITTEN
But if there is an insect infestation, he has a number of tips that can help prevent the insects from entering your home.
First, he said, all openings and cracks around the foundation had to be filled with caulk or foam.
“This is also a good time to insulate the rim joist because there is a lot of overlap between the two jobs,” he said.
“You should also thoroughly inspect all windows and doors and ensure that they are properly sealed.
“If you feel like it, you can throw a bug bomb in the attic for peace of mind.”
PAINT AGAINST PESTS
Most people know that they should use bug spray, but it may not occur to many that insecticides can also be mixed into wall paint.
“If you’re painting (everyone paints when they buy a new house), you can add an insecticide additive to the paint,” he said.
He added that insects enter through vegetation, but that this can be prevented by pruning shrubs and bushes so that they do not come into contact with the house.
A granular insecticide should also be applied routinely around the home, including in flower beds and the garden.
However, do not spray on flowering plants while they are in bloom to prevent honeybees from dying.
“I use bifenthrin (well-known brand name: Ortho Bug-B-Gon, but also available under other names and cheaper at Walmart and hardware stores) because it is virtually non-toxic to mammals — very safe if you’re not an insect,” he said.
“You can never completely eradicate spiders (unless you plan to move to the Arctic Circle or Antarctica), but you can certainly reduce them to a point where you don’t notice them anymore.”
