My skin looks damn good for my age, I used a drugstore cream as a teenager
It seems that times were favorable for a woman who owed her youthful appearance to a good skin care routine.
She was impressed that her long-term anti-aging routine had resulted in such smooth skin.
Reddit user Self-employed ideas007 may have taken an “uninformed journey into anti-aging skin care” in her 20s, but she was now grateful for what she saw in the mirror.
“And here I am now, much older, maybe wiser, but my skin looks damn good for my age,” she said.
“I don’t look 20, but I’m not a wrinkled plum either. I work with a wide range of ages and everyone thinks I’m much younger than I am. So I’m happy with that.”
While she didn’t use sunscreen in her beauty routine at the time – which she regretted – she did share a frugal find that she was a fan of.
“As a teenager, I would sneak into my mom’s bathroom and use her Oil of Olay face cream,” she says.
Still, she wished she could have gone back in time and done things a little differently.
“But there was no end to the stupidity, because I hardly used sunscreen, got badly burned a few times and always went to the tanning bed,” she said.
She remembers that the only information about skin care she could find as a child was from magazines or from “the lady behind the makeup counter at Macy’s.”
She received another tip during her trip.
During a trip to Mexico at age 24, she recalls that her “first big step” in her skin care journey was purchasing Retin-A cream.
However, due to the language barrier, she had to take a chance on reducing wrinkles, as she couldn’t even read the instructions.
She also got advice from a girl she used to work with who sold Avon cosmetics.
“I remember they had a little booklet with different face creams based on your age,” she said.
Having no knowledge about anti-aging, she ended up buying the cream for the 50+ age group, thinking it would “work better than the age-appropriate cream.”
She would continue to use the cream for another ten years, but that wasn’t the only thing she incorporated into her routine.

Others also shared their own skin care tips.
“My aunt used tretinoin faithfully, along with every skin care product she could get her hands on, since she was young. But she started using tretinoin consistently in the 90s,” one Redditor wrote.
“Now that I’m in my late 40s, it’s all about preventative maintenance: gentle cleansing, vitamin C serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, retinol a few times a week and maybe an exfoliant once a week,” said another.
“Skincare is only a small part of your battle. How you deal with daily stress, exercise and your diet are a bigger part of looking and feeling young,” added another user.
