In its viral videoTikTok user Alessandro (@spicymoustache) revealed how to prevent garlic and onions from sprouting before using them.

“Keep them separated and use paper bags to store them in the dark,” he advised.

The TikToker demonstrated the simple technique before placing each of the paper bags into separate mesh bags and hanging them in his kitchen.

Onions emit ethylene gas, which can cause the vegetables around them to sprout.

He also explained how placing the stems on a flat cloth and covering them can help prevent moisture loss, keeping them fresh for longer.

For potatoes, he recommended laying them flat in a dark, breathable container.

The TikToker also advised his audience not to wash off the dirt layer on their potatoes.

For his next suggestion, Alessandro explained the best way to store your fruit.

People are just now realizing that there is a secret function on their cheese graters, and it makes the PERFECT thin slices

He recommended separating your bananas and covering each stem with a piece of wax paper.

Alessandro also suggested placing the most popular fruits in your household in a separate container and keeping them on your counter.

Finally, he advised his followers to store their fresh ingredients in airtight containers.

The nutritionist explained that this helps keep your groceries fresh for longer.

He added that this tactic can help reduce your food waste and eliminate single-use packaging.

The ‘correct’ way to store food

1. Use airtight containers

This helps prevent exposure to air, which can cause your food to spoil. A glass container can help it be more hygienic and durable.

2. Label everything

Labeling your food can help you track expiration dates and prevent food waste.

3. Store like items together

This makes it easier to find what you are looking for. Use refrigerator dividers or reusable bags to divide your refrigerator.

4. Use the refrigerator and freezer wisely

Store raw meat on the bottom shelf to avoid contamination, and use the freezer for long-term storage.

5. Rotate your inventory

Place newer items at the back and bring the older ones to the front. This means you can notice the food that should be eaten first.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.

“You are the best brother, keep up the great work,” wrote one impressed viewer.

“Great tips! I would keep my onions and garlic all together and they would sprout naturally. You are so helpful,” said another follower.

“I would love to live with him for a month. Learn from the best teacher,” said a third person.

“I’ve never known how to store tomatoes before! I can’t wait to try this,” wrote another commenter.
