Myna traffic delays: Hilarious moment an angry bird attacks the highway camera

This is the funny moment a tropical bird was caught watching itself on a highway camera in New Zealand.

Footage shows the myna landing in front of a camera monitoring a section of the Northern Gateway Toll Road, between Silverdale and Puhoi, on October 21.

The black and yellow feathered creature opened its beak wide and appeared to squeak loudly as it peered into the lens.

At one point it disappeared briefly, before returning for a few seconds and flying away.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said: ‘The myna bird is a pest in New Zealand – it is aggressive towards our native birds, destroying their nests, eating native fruit and taking over other birds’ territories, so this was definitely not a welcome cameo on our cameras.

‘We monitor highways 24 hours a day, seven days a week, although a myna irritation like this can make the roads a bit harder to see.

‘Fortunately the myna did not linger long and bird’s eye view of the road was quickly restored.’

In New Zealand, mynas are an introduced species native to Asia.

They are known for their adaptability to urban and agricultural environments, but are considered invasive species due to their aggressive nesting habits that often displace native birds and negatively impact local biodiversity.

Mynas are considered talking birds and are capable of reproducing human speech when kept in captivity.
