‘Nafrat ki dukaan’: PM Modi on Congress over ‘attack’ on writer | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress at two rallies he held at poll-bound Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana, citing recent incidents including the alleged assault on an Indian journalist by a member of Rahul Gandhi’s team during his US visit.
He also criticised the statements of Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge, who said that if his party had won 20 more seats, BJP leaders would have been jailed.
In Jammu, Modi said: “The Congress talks about the Constitution and roams around holding ‘Nafrat ki Dukaan’ in the name of ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’. I read in the newspapers today that an Indian journalist was severely assaulted while in America… Independent media is a pillar of a vibrant democracy. Is such treatment of a journalist a true reflection of the dignity of India?”
He referred to the alleged attack on a journalist by Congressmen in Dallas when he asked Indian Overseas Congress president Sam Pitroda whether Rahul Gandhi would raise the issue of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh during his meeting with US lawmakers. Modi asked whether locking a journalist in a room upholds democratic values. He added: “The word ‘Constitution’ does not suit you.”
Referring to Kharge’s remark, the prime minister said the Congress president reflected his party’s mentality, full of “ahankar” (arrogance). “Look at what he (Kharge) said… Do you want a government to send leaders to jail or for the welfare of the people?” he said.
At a rally in Haryana, Modi hit out at the Congress over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks that his party will consider ending the reservation system at an appropriate time.
