NBA could add ‘in-season tournament as early as 2023-24 season with cup games until November and December’
- NBA teams may have one more tournament ahead of the play-in
- According to a report, the league will soon launch a seasonal tournament
- The framework means that all teams compete for a final eighth place through cup competitions
- Games were supposed to last until November before a single-game final took place in December
- The concept would see the final teams playing an 83-game schedule, while teams that don’t make it would only compete in the usual 82-game season.
NBA basketball is about to get more interesting as the league looks set to move toward a tournament in the season, possibly as early as 2023, according to a report.
Under the contemporary framework, as outlined by Shams Charania of The Athletic, all NBA teams would compete in cup games through November.
Why do you ask that? All with the aim of progressing to the last eight for the chance to play in a one-off final in December.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the League Investigate an In-Season Tournament
In the meantime, the remaining 22 teams of the league would continue to play in the regular season.
Tournament matches as it stands will be part of the NBA’s usual 82-game regular season schedule.
However, the lucky couple who reach the final will play 83 matches.
The single-game finale seems to be the NBA’s way of bringing more urgency and interest to a regular season of load management.
Seemingly, it will provide an opportunity to generate excitement in the midst of a college football and NFL tough period.
According to the report, the league and the NBPA are still working together on the details of the tournament, including the prizes being offered for the final eight teams and even the finalists.
In September 2021, an in-season tournament was discussed during a match committee call with $1 million prize money per player placed on the table.
Unless the Lakers make it to the cup final, they will play the usual 82 games like the other teams
A tournament has long been in the head of the league, especially given the recent success of the play-in tournament, which NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke to in February.
“Related to that, for me, in terms of trying new things, then it makes sense to look at some of the other concepts that we’ve talked about, like a tournament in the season.”
“In some ways the players were more receptive to the possibility of a tournament in the season because the Play-In was a bit more successful,” Silver added.
The NBA and the NBPA are still discussing what the tournament prize pool might look like
