Nearly half of Britons are fed up with being an adult – and exhausted
Nearly half of Britons claim they are tired of being an adult and feel exhausted by daily responsibilities such as earning a salary, paying bills and housework.
A survey of 2,000 adults found that 45% struggle with the responsibilities that come with being an ‘adult’, such as cooking dinner (25%), trying to save money (31%) and keeping the house tidy (35%).
Meeting deadlines at work (15%), staying fit (18%) and getting up early to work or take care of the kids (15%) also make the top 20.
Nearly a quarter (23%) are exhausted by the “endless political drama” and 23% are starting to get fed up with the unpredictable British weather.
The research was commissioned by Malibu and Oatly to launch Paradise Arches, an exclusive clubhouse in London’s Shoreditch district. 53% of respondents would like to have more time to escape from adult responsibilities.
And 23% are excited about the idea of a “one-hour vacation,” where they would be completely free from their tasks.
Others try to escape their adult obligations by watching live music (28%), going out to socialise (20%) and sipping on a cocktail (17%).
Craig van Niekerk from Malibu said: “Adulting can be exhausting and there is no manual or guide to help you get through it.
“Our research has shown that we want to escape from even the most basic tasks. It seems that we are all in dire need of a summer feeling and the possibility of fun times.
“Just an hour away from your responsibilities can help you disconnect and enjoy the summer. That’s why we’ve created the perfect place to escape.”
Advice to ‘switch off’
Brand ambassador for the collaboration, AJ Odudu, said: “It can be so hard to relax when you have so many responsibilities, but I think we all deserve the chance to take a break and enjoy the longer days and hopefully the sunny weather.
“I also find that I can relax more easily when I can completely step away from reality, even if it’s just for an hour.”
The survey also found that 43% think growing up is harder now than it was 10 years ago.
And 20% feel like they have to ‘push through’ every day and hardly take time for themselves or a moment of rest.
The research found that 12% felt they didn’t have time to fully detach each week, while those who did felt they only had six hours and 20 minutes each week.
Of the 67% who feel they need more time to fully relax, they would like to set aside 7 hours and 25 minutes per week to do so.
Difficulty relaxing
The research, conducted via OnePoll, also found that 19% find it difficult to completely disconnect, even on holiday.
26% would like to have an evening all to themselves, while 25% claim there is a lot of pressure to be seen as ‘successful’ and to have your life in order.
Although 24% indicated that despite being adults, they often do not feel this way.
And 16% are always looking for quick ways to disconnect and escape from adult obligations.
Martin Ringqvist from Oatly, which has teamed up with Malibu to create the ‘Piña Oatlada’ – a dairy-free, piña colada-flavoured, alcoholic soft serve ice cream, said: “Adulting comes with a lot of challenges, and you would think that as you get older it would get easier and easier as you gain more experience.
“But it seems like the responsibilities are increasing and you are faced with new challenges that can surprise you. Think of getting a soft serve campaign approved by two teams of lawyers. That’s why it’s so important to take a moment to let go.
“We’re always looking for new and unexpected ways for people to experience our brand and this is a perfect partner to launch our glorious oatmeal into the nightlife. Just make sure you lick responsibly.”
