Netflix shares sneak peek of Terminator Zero after data breach and new sci-fi series has a cyberpunk vibe
As the hype continues to grow for Terminator ZeroNetflix’s new anime adaptation of the franchise, the streamer has released a new clip that made my jaw drop. The new sneak peek follows the release of several stunning first look images And an incredible trailer, and confirms that this may be the best part in the Terminator saga since its sequel, which we rated the best Terminator film.
The Terminator franchise has historically been a bit of a mixed bag. Since James Cameron introduced the world to Arnold Schwaznegger’s T-800 in the 1984 classic, only his own 1991 sequel has garnered universal fan acclaim, with Jonathan Mostow delivering a semi-decent third film in 2003, and a trilogy of failed trilogy starters since then. The TV spin-off, The Sarah Connor Chroniclesstarring Game of Thrones‘ Lena Heady as the title character, was just hitting her stride when the series was canceled in 2009. But Terminator Zero seems to overshadow them all with its visually stunning reimagining of the saga, moving the action to Tokyo, with no Connor around.
What can we expect from Terminator Zero?
Starring Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson and André Holland, Terminator Zero will be familiar to fans, but also refreshingly new. Netflix’s synopsis reads: “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who is working to launch a new AI system designed to rival Skynet’s impending assault on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by a ruthless assassin from the future, who will forever change the fate of his three children.”
And the new sneak-peek gives us a glimpse of what Malcom needs to be protected from. Echoes of the original Terminator 2: Judgment Day teaser, the clip shows an automated factory assembling one of the deadly machines, before humanoid skin is applied and the new Terminator steps into a time machine, strikes the iconic pose and is sent back to Japan circa 1997. During the assembly process, beautiful abstract shots show the machine being assigned its target before passing through a corridor of hundreds of completed Terminators in stasis, ready for their own missions.
For release on August 29th (Judgment Day, according to the Cameron films) Terminator Zero is one of the many animation projects that have been leaked in their entirety as a result of a huge data leak at Netflix earlier in the month. The breach saw a number of shows, including Arcane And Heart Conquerormay have leaked episodes months before they were released. The streamer didn’t hold back with its response, telling The Wrap: “One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online. Our team is taking aggressive action to have it removed.”
The Day of Judgment is almost here and when it comes, we will not only have one of the greatest best netflix series And best netflix anime but also the Terminator story fans have been waiting for.
