British holidaymakers will receive another blow this summer as the cost of renting a car abroad has tripled in the past three years since the Covid pandemic.

According to research by iCarhireinsurance, from July 30 to August 6, it will cost 110 percent more than in 2019 to rent a small family car.

Studying six rental companies in 12 countries, the insurer and comparison site also found that renting a car in Florida has risen from £231 to £650, a rise of 181 percent.

Similarly, in the most expensive location analyzed, Geneva, the price is up 164 percent from £353 to £933.

The current cost and availability crisis started in 2020, when the travel industry shut down and rental companies started selling cars to survive.

Industry estimates say US rental companies sold a third of their cars in the first year of the pandemic, while European companies cut their fleets by more than half.

Many companies have not been able to replace their fleets due to inventory problems, which has also led to a huge increase in costs.

The fleet of the American rental company Hertz numbered 481,000 in March, compared to 700,000 in 2019.

Alex Hasty, of the comparison site Compare the Market, said: The times: ‘Arranging your car hire abroad before you go can save you time, money and stress. Queuing up at a car rental counter upon arrival, rather than comparing rental car companies before traveling, may mean you’re not getting the best deal.

“Maybe you should also make do with what’s there, rather than a car of your choice. By planning ahead for your trip, you can calculate a fixed price, choose a suitable car and any extras.’

‘High car hire prices will hit holiday budgets hard this year wherever you go,’ said Rory Boland, editor of the Which? Travel Guide.

In the worst cases, he says some areas could run out of cars.

Booking early can alleviate the situation somewhat, as even today’s prices can look like bargains by the time the school holidays arrive.

Another tip is to pay the full amount when booking. That’s because rental companies may now be taking bookings for cars they hope to have delivered in the coming months.
