‘Newspaper cracker’: Congress reacts to govt declaring June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The federal government on Friday announced to observe the national holiday 25 Junethe day the former prime minister Indira Gandhi had a national Emergency in 1975, as ‘Hatya Diwas Gathering‘.
The Union Minister of Home Affairs announced the government’s decision Amit Shah said the action will “commemorate the enormous contributions of all those who endured the inhuman pain of the 1975 emergency”.
Amit Shah called the Emergency a “blatant display of Indira Gandhi’s directorial mentality”.
“On June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in a shameless display of dictatorial mentalitystrangled the soul of our democracy by imposing a state of emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars through no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced,” Amit wrote in a post on X.
“The Government of India has decided to celebrate June 25 every year as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas“This day will commemorate the enormous contribution of all those who endured the inhuman pain of the 1975 emergency,” he wrote.
Shortly after Shah shared the government’s decision, the prime minister said Narendra Modi June 25, the day of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’, will reportedly serve as “a reminder of what happens when India’s Constitution is trampled on”.
“It is also a day to pay tribute to all those who suffered under the excesses of the Emergency, a dark phase in Indian history unleashed by the Congress,” Prime Minister Modi wrote in a message on X.
Congress’ response to ‘ModiMukti Diwas’
The government’s new decision has created an uproar in the Congress, with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh terming the Centre’s move as another “headline-grabbing exercise” by Prime Minister Modi.
Reacting to the ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ declaration, Jairam Ramesh said, “June 4 will go down in history as ModiMukti Diwas”.
“Yet another headline-grabbing hypocrisy from the non-biological Prime Minister who imposed Emergency rule for a decade before the people of India handed him a decisive personal, political and moral defeat on June 4, 2024 — which will go down in history as ModiMukti Diwas,” said Jairam Ramesh.
In a veiled attack on the RSS, the BJP’s ideological mentor, Ramesh said the organisation refused to accept the Constitution as it “did not draw inspiration from Manusmriti”.
Ramesh further attacked PM Modi, saying, “This is a non-organic Prime Minister who has systematically attacked the Constitution of India and its principles, values and institutions. This is a non-organic Prime Minister whose ideological parivar had rejected the Constitution of India in November 1949 on the grounds that it was not inspired by Manusmriti. This is a non-organic Prime Minister for whom democracy means only demo-kursi.”
