Nintendo Switch 2 may not be released until April 2025
Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch next year, with reports from earlier this year claiming that the next-generation hybrid console would likely launch in March 2025. Nintendo also confirmed in May that it would announce the Switch successor during the fiscal year ending March 2025. However, it appears that the company’s next console may not launch in the current fiscal year. Game developers have reportedly been told not to expect the Nintendo Switch 2 before April 2025, which would push the device’s release timeline back beyond fiscal 2025.
Nintendo Switch 2 Expected Launch Timeline
The information comes from GamesIndustry.biz podcastwho claims that Nintendo’s next console will not be released this fiscal year.
“When Nintendo announced their financials, they said they would announce the successor to the Switch in the next financial year. They didn’t say they would release it,” Chris Dring, head of games B2B at the publication, said during the latest episode of the GamesIndustry.biz Microcast. “In previous financial years, when they released a new console, they normally said they would release a new console,” he added.
Dring also claimed that game developers weren’t expecting the Nintendo Switch 2 to come out in the current fiscal year. “No developers I’ve talked to expect it to come out in this fiscal year,” he said. “They’ve actually been told not to expect it in the fiscal year. A lot of people I’ve talked to are hoping it’s out in April, May, early next year, not too late.”
The claims line up with Nintendo’s official update about the Switch successor. In May, the company said it planned to make an announcement about the Nintendo Switch 2 during the fiscal year ending March 2025. While Nintendo could officially announce the Switch 2 by the end of March 2025, the console’s actual launch could come later.
Nintendo hasn’t released any details about its next console yet, but it’s likely to retain the Switch’s hybrid form factor with upgraded hardware specs. The Switch has gone from strength to strength since its launch in March 2017, having sold over 140 million units. It’s the third best-selling console of all time, behind only the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS.
Despite the Switch 2 being on the way, the Japanese company has announced new games for the Nintendo Switch, including a new The Legend of Zelda title, due out later this year. Nintendo expects to sell 13.5 million Switch units in the current fiscal year.
