“No! Give it back now!” people shout as the wedding guest shows off her black tie
A guest at her wedding caused a stir online after posting a photo of the outfit she wanted to wear.
The woman modelled the divisive style for her followers, who compared the look to underwear.
In her viral videoTikTok user Sadie (@sstraining) explained how difficult it was to figure out what to wear to her friend’s brother’s wedding.
She said she was still waiting for the other options, but she only had four days to return her current choice.
Sadie took a step back to give her audience a glimpse of her current outfit.
The two-piece look featured a black crop top with spaghetti straps, which she described as looking “really cheap.”

“This is my first option, I think it looks really cheap. The straps are cheap and the fabric feels cheap,” Sadie said.
Her fitted skirt reached down to her ankles and then flared out slightly, creating a mermaid look.
The skirt also featured a black lace detail at the waist, which partially covered Sadie’s bare midriff.
“Is this even considered black tie? Should I even consider this as an option?” she asked.
Her followers shared their thoughts on the two-piece look in the comments.
“No! Back! For black tie, think ball gown, formal evening dress,” wrote one viewer.
“I thought this was the slip dress, the layer you wear under your dress. Please google black tie dress code, it’s super formal,” another TikTok user said.
“No loose clothing, bare stomachs or spaghetti straps with a black tie,” a third person advised.
“Definitely come back. I thought you were wearing a slip to show us the real dress,” wrote another commenter.
“I feel like you only heard ‘black’ and not ‘black tie,’” one follower commented.
“DEFINITELY a NO for a black tie wedding. But a YES for a New Year’s Eve outfit or similar event with a sequin blazer,” someone else suggested.
Do’s and Don’ts of Wedding Dress Codes
By Josie Griffiths, fabulous deputy editor and bride-to-be.
Josie Griffiths said: I will never forget the wedding I went to in October 2022 where one guest wore a white dress.
The dress didn’t fit properly, it reached the knee and didn’t look like a real wedding dress at all, but that didn’t stop everyone from judging her.
The rules for wedding guest outfits – which, unfortunately, are much stricter for women than for men – are supposed to be about “not overshadowing the bride,” which is actually quite difficult to do at someone else’s wedding.
But if you do it wrong as a guest, you’ll come across as a bit ridiculous, and to a lot of people who don’t know you personally.
It’s just not the right occasion for your new white dress, no matter how much online retailers like to dump them in the “wedding guest” category.
I would avoid anything too tight/short and avoid very formal dresses unless the dress code dictates it. You don’t want to be wearing a long sequined dress to a smart casual event.
Personally, I don’t like black dresses either, it’s not a funeral.
Otherwise, you should be pretty safe. Technically, wearing red means you’re in love with the groom, but that’s the kind of rule most people would laugh at these days.
I always check what colour the bridesmaids are wearing, just to be sure. After the Spanish wedding I saw them walking down the aisle in the exact same dress that I had in my Asos shopping bag a few weeks earlier.
If you are in doubt, it is best to ask the bride. But if you are already in doubt about your dress, that may be all the answer you need.
“No, even though it goes all the way down, it’s more of a cocktail dress. Generally, black tie dresses have longer sleeves,” wrote one viewer.
“That can’t even be a backup option,” another TikTok user said.
“This is the complete opposite of black tie. A definite RETURN,” one follower wrote.
“I am also going to a black tie wedding and I have done so much research since I have never been to one myself. And this is a big no-no,” wrote another commenter.
“Buddy, if your waist is showing, it’s probably not black tie,” one viewer noted.
