'No proposal for government': Karnataka on reports of reservations for Muslims in jobs

NEW DELHI: The Karnataka Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Tuesday issued a statement dismissing media reports about potential job reservations for Muslims as ‘yet another lie’. The CMO confirmed that while there were requests for such reservations, there was no formal proposal.
The CMO’s clarification came amid ongoing controversy over Muslim reservations in Karnataka. News agency ANI reported that the official statement was in reference to media reports on proposed job reservation for Muslims and said, “A report has been published in some media that a proposal to give job reservation to Muslims is before the government.”
“It is true that there is a demand for a reservation. However, it has been made clear that there is no proposal before the government in this regard,” the statement said.
At a rally in Palamu, Jharkhand, on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Congress’ stand on Muslim reservations. He said, “Congress talks about reservations but in our Constitution there is no such provision allowing reservations on the basis of religion. In Maharashtra, some ‘Ulema’ submitted a memorandum seeking 10 percent reservation for Muslims. Congress said they would help them. Congress wants to give 10 percent reservation to Muslims by reducing the reservation limit for OBCs, Dalits and Tribals.”
Shah claimed, “I want to warn Rahul Gandhi from here. As long as the Bharatiya Janata Party is there, minorities in this country will not get reservations. He termed the Congress as an “anti-OBC” party.
Earlier in April this year, the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) raised concerns over Karnataka’s classification of Muslims as OBCs.
