Nothing OS 3.0 was announced on Saturday by CEO Carl Pei. The company, known for its social media marketing strategies, made waves when the company’s CEO “leaked” new features and an announcement timeline for the third major update to its smartphone operating system. Nothing OS 3.0 will feature customizable lock screens that will integrate widgets. There’s also a dot animation feature, which was hinted at in a separate post. Nothing OS 3.0 is set to be announced in September, but no specific date was given.
No OS 3.0 new features announced
In a after On X (formerly known as Twitter), Pei posted a pair of images showcasing the new lock screen customization feature. The Nothing co-founder posted the images along with the caption, “Apologies in advance to the team for this leak… but I’m too excited!” The post follows several such quirky social media posts that Pei has made in an attempt to drum up excitement for products and features. Notably, he changed his X moniker to ‘Carl Bhai’ ahead of the Nothing Phone 2a’s launch.
In the post, one of the images showed three different lock screen views, each with a unique customization. The first showed the default lock screen with the clock, day and date, and shortcuts at the bottom. However, the second view, which will be available with Nothing OS 3.0, showed an option called “Clock + Widget”.
This tweak comes with three widgets: weather, a quick action shortcut, and the date. This screen displays the clock in Nothing’s dot matrix font. The second tweak option is called “Expanded Widget Area,” and it’s likely to offer more information about the lock screen. In the shared image, a large analog clock and a day and date tile take up the space given to the clock on the previous two lock screens. This option also includes widgets for quick actions, weather, and contacts.
In a separate post, Pei also hinted at a Dot Animation feature. This feature, which appears to be for images, has three layers: input image, live interaction layer, and final output. The CEO did not share the usage scenario or how the feature works. Finally, he also hinted at the announcement date for Nothing OS 3.0 in the post, adding, “I’ll stop now to leave some magic for the September announcement.”
