Nova radio host reveals the most ‘intimidating’ stars he’s ever met: ‘That was pretty hardcore’

Nova radio host Tim Blackwell has revealed the most ‘intimidating’ stars he has ever met during his decades-long career in showbusiness.

The Drive Show star, 43, admitted on Sunday that he felt very nervous meeting Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and The Cure’s Robert Smith.

He interviewed the former ‘backstage at a show in Brisbane’ and confessed he was intimidated by the 6ft rocker’s towering height. News.com.au.

‘I interviewed [Josh, 51] backstage at a show in Brisbane and he was walking around with a bottle of Jägermeister in his hand, just taking a swig from the bottle,” Tim said.

‘That was pretty hardcore. And then I met Robert Smith from The Cure and just visually he’s very intimidating.

“He rocks the makeup and he just has kind of a punk rock attitude. I said a few words to him and he spoke very, very softly and very directly.”

Despite being initially intimidated by Robert’s appearance, Tim said his nerves eased when he saw the British punk rocker, 65, trying to make a sandwich.

The radio personality, who will host this year’s ARIAs, said seeing Robert making a sandwich made him realize the rocker was “just one of us.”

Tim added that it was “a pretty nice moment.”

It comes after the Nova FM star was named as host for the ARIA Awards 2024, which will take place at Sydney’s iconic Hordern Pavilion on November 20.

The popular radio host is joined by co-hosts Bridget Hustwaite, Latifa Tee, Christian Wilkins and Rhys Nicholson.

A mainstay of Nova’s drive-time show Ricki-Lee, Tim and Joel, Tim has been one of Australia’s top radio personalities since 2001.

He is known for his charismatic style and is excited to bring his energy to the ARIA stage.

Reflecting on the role, Tim said: “The ARIA Awards represent the pinnacle of the Australian music industry.”

“I am thrilled to be part of the ARIAs and help celebrate this talent this year,” he added.

Some of Australia’s most recognized artists and presenters will appear on the red carpet, including: Ava Max, Missy Higgins, CYRIL and 3%.

Jessica Mauboy, Julian Hamilton of The Presets, Amy Shark. Kane Brown, Artemas, Budjerah, Concetta Caristo and Luka Muller will also make an appearance.

This year’s nominees include some of Australia’s biggest stars and emerging talents.

Pop icon Kylie Minogue has received five nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Solo Artist for her latest hit album Tension.

Her record-breaking album, along with the popular title track, has also earned her nominations for Best Pop Release and Song of the Year.

Kylie, 56, will compete against big names like The Kid LAROI, Tones and I, Troye Sivan and Dom Dolla in the Best Solo Artist category.

She will also compete against Amy Shark, Angie McMahon and Royel Otis for Album of the Year.

They are closely followed by Dom Dolla, who has received six nominations, including best solo artist, best electronic release and song of the year.

Meanwhile, Troye, Tones and I, First Nations hip-hop collective 3%, Amy Shark, Rüfüs Du Sol and The Kid LAROI all secured four nominations.

Confidence Man and FISHER have also been recognized in three categories, with the winners being crowned at the Hordern Pavilion on November 20.

The Aria Awards 2024, in partnership with YouTube, showcases the best of Australia’s music talent and will be broadcast live on Stan from 5pm AEDT.
