I’ve been testing mattresses online for six years so you don’t have to. I think I’ve reviewed almost 250 different mattresses online, and the Novosbed was one of the first ones I ever tried. I remember liking it then, and I still do now.
It is a simple all-foam bed with mostly memory foam on top for comfort. This provides sleepers with a sinking, body-conforming feel similar to what you would find on a Tempur-Pedic mattress. In this review, I’ll cover everything you need to know about this bed, including who it’s best for.
First impressions of Novosbed
Like many other mattresses, the Novosbed was shipped to us completely free and came in a large box. The unpacking process was the same as any other, we dragged it inside, ripped off all the plastic and then the mattress began to unfold and slowly expand. Since this is an all foam bed, we gave it a night to fully inflate.
In the morning the mattress seemed ready to be tested. When I tested the responsiveness I found it to be on the slow side. It didn’t feel as dense or viscous as a Tempur-Pedic bed, but it certainly didn’t respond as well as something like a Layla mattress. This idea was further confirmed when I jumped on it — lots of slow-reacting properties.
Novosbed mattress firmness and feel
How does it feel in Novosbed?
This bed definitely has a straightforward style of memory foam feel. It’s not overly responsive or dense, it just feels like your average memory foam mattress. This type of mattress feel can be a bit divisive, you either love it or hate it — most people love it, though.
As a material, memory foam is slower to respond than others. It’s designed to essentially “remember” your body’s shape, hence the name. It’s a great sleep surface for anyone who sleeps in one main sleeping position all night because it conforms to your body’s shape. However, if you’re a combination sleeper who tends to toss and turn during the night, you may find memory foam restrictive.
How firm is the Novosbed mattress?
The Novosbed comes in three different firmness levels, you can choose from a soft, medium and firm option. We tested the medium version and found it to be around a good medium. This makes it a great option for all sleepers, back, side, stomach and combination sleepers.
Firmness is usually a subjective thing that depends mainly on your weight. If you are a heavier person, you may sink into beds more and find them softer, while smaller people may find them firmer because they lie more on mattresses. Regardless of your body type, it is nice to know that Novosbed comes in different firmness levels so that you can meet every preference.
Novosbed mattress construction
As I said, this is a fairly basic all-foam mattress, 28cm thick and consisting of only three foam layers:
1. At the bottom you have a thick supporting core of polyurethane foam. This acts as the fundamental support layer for the Novosbed.
2. Then you have a transition layer of memory foam, which acts as a buffer above the support foam, making it less noticeable.
3. On top is another layer of memory foam which is more open-celled and breathable. This acts as the main comfort layer of the bed.
4The whole is completed by the removable and machine washable cover of the bed. This allows you to clean the bed easily and thoroughly on a regular basis.
Novosbed mattress performance
Motion isolation
Because this is an all-foam mattress that primarily features memory foam for comfort, it does a pretty good job of cushioning and absorbing movement across the mattress. Of all the comfort materials used in beds, memory foam tends to be the best at motion isolation. If you or your partner tend to move around during the night while you sleep, those nighttime movements shouldn’t resonate to the other side of this mattress.
Edge-to-edge support
This bed also performs averagely when it comes to edge support. There is no noticeable roll-off sensation if you sleep close to the perimeter of this mattress at night, but you may experience an even firmer edge on a hybrid bed. Beds with support coils generally perform better for edge support, at least based on our testing.
Temperature
Although the main comfort layer of the Novosbed is breathable and the cover is somewhat cool to the touch, we would classify this bed as temperature neutral. It won’t necessarily actively cool you down, but it shouldn’t really warm you up either. Sleep temperature is mostly dependent on external factors such as your bedding and the temperature of the room, rather than the mattress itself.
Sustainability
For an all-foam bed, we’d say this is a pretty durable mattress. That said, it’s best for supporting a small to medium build. If you’re heavier, you’ll be fine with this bed, but you’ll get more long-term support and durability from a hybrid mattress.
Who is the Novosbed mattress most suitable for?
Because memory foam is a somewhat divisive sleep material, the Novosbed may be best for a certain subset of sleepers. Here are the people we think will love this mattress:
Sleeping position
Since the Novosbed comes in three different firmness levels, it should work for all types of sleepers. The medium option should work best for combination sleepers, while the soft version is suitable for side sleepers. If you are more of a primary back or stomach sleeper, the firm version of the bed may be the right choice. All in all, this bed can work for a wide range of sleep styles.
Body type
Since it is an all-foam bed, it is ideal for supporting medium to small builds, but heavier people can also get by with it. If you are on the much heavier side, you may prefer the level of support offered by a hybrid mattress. Those types of beds are better at supporting larger builds. With the Novosbed, you don’t get coils on the bottom, but you do get a good amount of support for an all-foam mattress. I think it will be quite durable for most people in the long run.
Novosbed mattress prices
Mate | Dimensions (inches) | Price |
---|---|---|
Twin | 38×75 inches | €799 |
Twin XL | 38×80 inches | €849 |
Full | 54×75 inches | €899 |
Queen | 60×80 inch | $999 |
King | 76×80 inches | $1,199 |
Cal King | 72×84 inches | $1,199 |
This mattress is surprisingly affordable for an online memory foam offering. In terms of quality, I’d say it can compete well with Tempur-Pedic beds, a household name when it comes to luxury memory foam mattresses. Before the discount, you can get a queen-sized Novosbed for just under $1,000. Sometimes Novosbed even bundles free sleep accessories with every mattress purchase.
Sample, Shipping and Warranty
As a brand, Novosbed backs its beds with some generous terms. The beds are shipped to you in a box for free, and once you own them, you get a 120-night trial period to try them out at home risk-free. If you don’t like them within that time, you can return them for free, but in some states a small return shipping fee may be deducted from your refund. On the other hand, if you decide to keep them, you get a 15-year limited warranty. Just make sure you use the right foundation for the bed, or your bed’s warranty may be void.
How does Novosbed compare to other mattresses?
Novosbed versus Nectar
These are two memory foam beds in the online space that have a responsive, body-conforming feel. While both are fairly affordable, Nectar is the more budget-friendly option at $650 for a queen after rebate. Unlike NectarNovosbed has a machine washable cover. This makes it the easier option to clean of the two. You will spend about $350 more for Novosbed, but this washable cover may be worth it for you and your setup.
Novosbed versus Layla
These two mattresses are closer in price. Both mattresses cost just under $1000 for a queen size. There are a few notable features that we should discuss about each mattress. The Novosbed has a machine washable cover, while Layla is a reversible bed. This means that both sides of the Layla mattress are designed to be slept on. Unfortunately, you can only sleep on one side of the Novosbed, but rest assured, that side is pretty cozy.
The final verdict
Considering that I still have such great things to say about this bed after six years of testing, this might be a great option to look into for your next online bed. If you’re looking for a memory foam mattress that comes in a few firmness options with a washable cover, this might be right up your alley — especially for the price.
The Novosbed mattress may be something for you if:
- You want a full foam mattress
- You want a slow foam feeling
- You want a bed that is available in multiple firmness levels
- You want a bed with a generous policy
- You want a bed with a machine washable cover
You may not like the Novosbed bed if:
- You are looking for a hybrid mattress
- You prefer the feel of a neutral foam mattress
- You have a very strict budget
Frequently asked questions about Novosbed mattresses
How do you wash the cover of the Novosbed?
If the top cover of the Novosbed gets dirty, you can unzip it from the rest of the mattress and throw it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Once it’s washed, I highly recommend letting it air dry rather than throwing it in the dryer — things love to shrink in there, mattress covers included.
Can you turn the Novosbed mattress?
Unfortunately, you can’t flip the Novosbed. It’s a one-sided bed with one main sleeping surface. There are a lot of beds in the online space that are two-sided, which is pretty cool — who doesn’t want two beds in one? Lots of options, like the Layla And Shelf beds, are reversible and definitely worth considering.
How long does the Novosbed mattress last?
The Novosbed should last at least the next 7-10 years, if not much longer. Hybrid beds tend to last longer than all-foam beds, but that experience may vary from case to case. For an all-foam mattress, I would say the Novosbed is quite durable and should last the average sleeper for years to come.
