Now protests in Pithoragarh over demolition of 'illegal mosque'
PITHORAGARH/DEHRADUN: Several members of a right-wing group along with some locals staged a protest rally and a sit-in, demanding demolition of what they described as an “illegal mosque” in Berinag area of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. They claimed that the mosque had been “illegally built in a house and should be removed”.
The latest incident took place amid ongoing tensions over a similar situation in the city of Uttarkashi more than a fortnight ago. Shortly after Saturday’s meeting, Berinag’s SDM Srestha Gunsola issued a summons to Abdul Nazim, who reportedly owns the house where the mosque is located, asking for “clarifications”. about the condition of the building.”
The SDM claimed that the land ownership case is currently pending in the court of Additional District Magistrate Pithoragarh. Gunsola said the house originally belonged to Abdul Mazid, who later moved to Haldwani where he died. Its ownership was then transferred to his son, Nazim, and the writ was issued.
The SDM added: “He has been given 15 days to respond to the summons.” The protest meeting was held by ‘Rashtriya Sewa Sangh’, which alleged that the house owned by a member of the minority community was “illegally converted into a religious place where fellow members visited in large groups to offer namaz”.
