NTPC focuses on mega projects in search of a 60 GW solar dream
NEW DELHI: NTPC will focus on gigawatt (GW) scale solar projects and limit wind and battery storage projects to 10% of its green portfolio, company chairman Gurdeep Singh said on Tuesday, even during the Rs 10,000 crore initial public offering of its green arm NGEL received a registration of 33% on the opening day.
Unfazed by the market slump following the election of Donald Trump as the next US president, he said the perception that IPO valuations would be “spicy” was misplaced. “We had consulted with hundreds of stakeholders and investors, who expected a higher price range, which we moderated based on (post-Trump) market conditions.”
“NTPC has a special relationship with states, a privilege that helps clear land hurdles, a major focus for solar projects, that few others can claim. We have the experience, the operational capacity and the project pipeline. There is clarity on all aspects of our roadmap,” he said.
On the focus on large solar projects, he said that as a pure energy producer, it makes more sense for us to build them in solar parks as aggregators set up the polar station on site. “For projects of 100-200 MW we should be lining up for connectivity.”
NTPC aims to increase renewable capacity to 19 GW by 2027, after almost doubling the current capacity from 3.5 GW to 6 GW by 2025. By 2032, this will account for almost 45% of the total power generation capacity, and almost the double the current capacity from 3.5 GW to 6 GW in 2025.
