- PURPLE: THINGS GOING UP AND DOWN LIFT, SUN, TIDE, YO-YO

I always find short Connections answers harder to group than longer ones, probably because there are just more ways to put them together. They often work as prefixes or suffixes, for example; HI can be combined with many other words very easily.
My strategy in these situations is to not rush things. Look for an obvious connection that doesn’t necessarily involve one of those short words, and see what happens. Today I got the blue “Types of Boots” group first, specifically THIGH-HIGH as a word that really couldn’t mean anything else. Then the “Meh” group, which OK took out of circulation. At that point, the rest of those short words quickly clustered into American states, leaving only the purple “Up and Down” group to solve by default (although I did solve it mentally first).
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

- PURPLE: WORDS AFTER “PAY” CONTROL, DIRTY, FRIEND, PHONE
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
