NYT Connections Today (Contest #418) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #418, are…
- YELLOW: STRETCHING, AS SOMEONE’S PATIENCE VOLTAGE, LOAD, TESTING, TRYING
- GREEN: THINGS A DJ DOES MIXING, SAMPLING, SCRATCHING, TURNING
- BLUE: ADJECTIVES USED IN GRAMMAR DIRECT, IRREGULAR, POSSESSIVE, PRESENT
- PURPLE: WHAT “GREEN” CAN MEAN ECOLOGICAL, JEALOUS, LUSH, NAUSEOUS
- My score: Moderate
- My score: 1 error
I spent most of today’s game alternately puzzling over what one of the groups might be – literally one of them – and then facepalming at their obvious nature when I finally saw them. The sheer amount of misdirection the NYT has cunningly shoehorned into the game didn’t help matters – OWNERS and JEALOUS could easily have gone together, as could SAMPLE and TEST and TRY (something scientific, perhaps?), or SPIN and TEST and TRY (as in ‘give it a try’).
None of those groups were real groups, though. I ended up getting the grammar assignment—as you’d hope, given my career choice—and then the DJ assignment. I also ended up solving the purple one, even though I would have gotten it anyway by then. So, a tough but satisfying episode of Connections all in all.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
