If I learned one thing from today’s Connections, it’s this: don’t play if you’re hungover. Only a slight one, admittedly, but still enough to throw me off. Although I’m not sure I would have solved it anyway. The first group, ‘School Facilities’, should have been available, but it would never have occurred to me to associate an AUDITORIUM with a school. Maybe not a LAB either; I think UK schools in the 80s were perhaps slightly less well-equipped than the average American high school…
I absolutely should have gotten the green ROULETTE BETS group, but got stuck on colors. I thought there might be a labrador retriever connection, possibly since I have one myself, so I played various combinations of RED, GOLD, BLACK, CHOCOLATE, and GREY until I exhausted all my guesses. I just couldn’t see what other connection there was. I would never have gotten the “Dove” group, since I’ve never heard of dove chocolate, and while I could have gotten the _Goose group, I just didn’t see that connection either. Bad form.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
