NYT Connections Today (Game #474) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game #474 are…
- YELLOW: AREA OF HIGH GROUND BANK, DUNE, HILL, HILL
- GREEN: MEANING GRAVITY, IMPORT, DUST, WEIGHT
- BLUE: ACTIONS IN FANTASY SPORTS BANK, DRAFT, START, TRADE
- PURPLE: SCI-FI FILMS, WITH “THE” ABYSS, FLY, MATRIX, THING
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 3 mistakes
What do MATRIX, THING, FLY, ABYSS, GRAVITY and DUNE all have in common? Of course, they’re all movies – and more specifically, all science fiction movies (although The Fly is also a horror). Four of them also formed a Connections group today – but which four?
If I had been a little more careful I could have figured it out sooner and not lost a gamble very early on. But I didn’t do that, I just picked four at random, which was a REALLY STUPID thing to do. Still, I got it on the second try, took a little more time and realized they were SCI-FI FILMS, WITH “THE”, and therefore ABYSS, FLY, MATRIX and THING.
I only lost one bet there, but threw away a few more in the blue ACTIONS IN FANTASY SPORTS group. I originally had IMPORT in there, thinking it was something about getting things/people from one place to another (which worked with DRAFT and TRADE), but I was slightly looking in the wrong place and almost got a failure. With no guesses left, I swapped IMPORT for BENCH, added START, and solved this Connections puzzle.
How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is slightly harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
