- BLUE: FURNITURE CHEST, CONSOLE, VANITY, WARDROBE
- PURPLE: WORDS WITH APOSTROPHENES REMOVED CANT, ID, SHELL, WERE
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 1 tip
A good strategy for Connections is (obviously) to focus on words that have a limited possible link to other words. By which I mean that some have multiple possible connections; a word like STOCK can appear before MARKT or after BEEF; it may be grouped with other words meaning LINEAGE or BLOOD, or with words meaning TRUST. Or, as here, it can mean EQUIP and be grouped with PROVISION, OUTFIT and FURNITURE.
CANT, on the other hand, is a relatively uncommon word that has only a few very limited connections to anything. And as I stared at it for a while, I noticed that one of them was that it didn’t have an apostrophe in it. Once I considered that, I saw SHELL (SHE WILL), WERE (WE ARE) and ID (ME) and resolved the purple group. The others followed quite quickly after the heaviest group was found.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is slightly harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
