NYT Connections Today (Game #491) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, game #491, are…
- YELLOW: RUMMING COMB, DIG, ROOT, SIEVE
- GREEN: SOUNDS OF THUNDER Slap, PEAL, ROLL, RUMBLE
- BLUE: WAYS TO DRESS YOUR HAIR UP Braid, Bun, PONY, TWIST
- PURPLE: THINGS THAT MAY HAVE LEAVES BOOK, SALAD, TABLE, TREE
- My rating: Simple
- My score: Perfect
I’m disappointed in myself for not solving today’s purple group, because it’s a really nice connection; THINGS THAT MAY HAVE LEAVES, with BOOK, SALAD, TABLE and TREE. I stared at it for a while hoping for inspiration, but none came and I ended up typing in those four words by default and solving it without knowing why I was doing so. This is perhaps the worst thing about Connections: the fact that you can complete it by getting just three of the four groups. Maybe there should be a way that when faced with that final puzzle, you can write your answer, and an AI assistant decides whether it’s correct or not (I imagine too many people play Connections for a human the referee may be).
However, that’s my only criticism today. This was a fairly simple Connections game, but a very fun one.
How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
