NYT Connections Today (Contest #461) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #461, are…
- YELLOW: WINE BOTTLE INFO GRAPE, REGION, VINTAGE, WINERY
- GREEN: CONSOLE INPUTS BUTTON, KNOB, SLIDER, SWITCH
- BLUE: PREFIXES PRO, RETRO, SUB, SUPER
- PURPLE: ___ KING CITIZEN, CALIFORNIA, LION, PROM
- My rating: Simple
- My score: 2 mistakes
Today’s Connections is another one that’s pretty straightforward. It doesn’t require too much specialist knowledge to begin with – KNOB, BUTTON, SLIDE, and SWITCH are just common words, for example. And while the WINE BOTTLE INFO group might be easier for people who drink wine, none of the answers are remotely obscure.
The one I technically didn’t solve was blue – which in retrospect was one of the easiest. That group was PREFIXES, with the answers PRO, SUB, RETRO and SUPER – all of which should have really occurred to me. But instead I focused on the [blank] king group, after spotting BURGER, LION and PROM. The problem was I couldn’t find the fourth, I guessed SUPER and PRO (random) before finally going for CALIFORNIA to complete the set. I don’t know what a CALIFORNIA KING is but I figured it out eventually so who cares…

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
